As They Will Kill You continues to generate curiosity for its genre-bending approach, producers Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti are shedding light on one of the film’s strongest pillars its cast. From high-octane action led by Zazie Beetz to layered character arcs and a compelling ensemble, the film appears to lean heavily on performance-driven storytelling.
Barbara Muschietti reveals that Beetz was always at the centre of their vision for the film’s protagonist. “Zazie Beetz was the first person we thought about for this role, for Asia, and it was such a dream to work with her. I can't say this enough. She did so many of her own stunts. She came to South Africa very early to train, and she was an absolute pleasure. And Kirill, I have to say it, put her through a meat grinder! [LAUGHS] I mean, you can see it on screen, and that's in part why the movie is so wonderful. And her role is so fantastic because you can see that she is doing those fight scenes herself. It's an incredibly physical role. I think she loved the chance to do something completely different, and we couldn't have been luckier than to have her.”
The emphasis on physicality and authenticity in Beetz’s performance hints at the film’s intense action design, while also underscoring the commitment from its lead actor.
Alongside her, Myha'la plays Maria, a character that introduces a narrative shift. Andy Muschietti elaborates on the dynamic between the two leads, stating, “Myha'la is a perfect counterfigure to the energy of Zazie playing Asia. There's a shared arc that is beautifully unpredictable. We start the story unfolding scene by scene, the story of Asia. And once we understand it, we are kicked in the butt with an inversion in the story, which is Maria’s. That's one of the surprises that got us excited when we were reading the script and that definitely gets people excited when they're watching the movie. And as I said, the way Kirill and Alex and the cast all approach the characters, it's individual work, but also combined work that they did together that is admirable.”
This interplay between Asia and Maria appears to be central to the film’s narrative design, promising both emotional depth and structural unpredictability.
The Muschiettis also highlight the strength of the ensemble cast, which includes Tom Felton, Heather Graham, and Patricia Arquette. Andy Muschietti notes, “I think the way they came together as an ensemble, these individual personalities, is really fascinating, including Tom Felton, Heather Graham, Patricia Arquette.”
Barbara Muschietti delves deeper into the characters, particularly those played by Graham and Arquette. “For example, Heather plays Sharon, an incredibly selfish and superficial woman that wants to conserve her looks and her status at all costs. But in this process, she is incredibly funny. And Patricia, her character is incredibly tough, and pretty soon you realize that she's the ring leader... But she has this antagonistic relationship with her husband, who is played by Paterson Joseph. And it's beautiful to get to their more tender moments, when they tell the story of why they ended up at the Virgil, and why they're still there. And I think only Patricia can just take that turn so perfectly.”
For Andy Muschietti, the ensemble’s contribution goes beyond individual performances, shaping the film’s emotional and thematic core. “It was really phenomenal to watch these actors bringing these characters to life. That is why we make movies. It’s fascinating to see them on set, creating, and it's fascinating to see in the edit room. You see the nuances within the group. This is not a monolithic group at the Virgil, they have ethical divergences between them, and these actors show you that.”
With a cast that blends physical intensity, narrative complexity, and ensemble synergy, They Will Kill You appears poised to deliver not just spectacle, but a character-driven experience anchored by powerful performances.
