EXCLUSIVE: “I always tell people buy clothes that you can always wear, you can re-use, restyle” – Neha Sharma talks about all things fashion

1. What is your take on Blenders Pride Fashion Tour ‘The Showcase’
I don’t know if everyone is aware of it but I know there’s talk about the fact that I am a model and an actor, But the fact that I also have a fashion background. So, for me- it’s a huge deal. Fashion was the thing for me up until movies happened. For me it’s a huge thing because FDCI and Blenders Pride Fashion Tour coming together for this is great. When I was in college, there’s one thing that I felt was that there is a need for more platforms for up-and-coming talent to showcase their talent. I believe these guys have started a great initiative for not only designers but models, photographers to showcase their talent. It’s a huge thing and I feel honoured to be a part of it.

2. How does it feel to be a jury member for the platform?
Quite Cool, isn’t it? I’ve never been a jury for things and it's a huge deal. There’s a sense of pride, I look back at my journey and I feel like it’s all been worthwhile and I am here now. It feels like my work is finally being acknowledged. I also believe it is amazing to have this kind of vision for other people who are participating to help them go the right way. It’s really cool.

3. From being a fashion student to an actress, how has your journey been?
It’s been a fabulous journey. Honestly, when I was studying, I felt like that was it for me. The time that I was studying in college it was all about obsessing over these designers and finally having my graduating show. I mean all those things were a huge deal. Fashion Week was a very important part of my life even back then. So, I know where FDCI was and finally to be a part of an event of this kind, is so cool. It’s like my life has come full circle. Fashion has always been a very big part of my life. Even in acting, I feel like clothes play a very important part of the character. I feel like it’s a very important part of the inherent sense of style. It really helps me through my journey. I feel very lucky and glad that I’ve done fashion and then films happened eventually. I feel like it’s a win-win for me.

4. Your Views on the collaboration between Blenders Pride Fashion Tour and FDCI?
It’s been 16 years since the Blenders Pride Fashion Tour has been evolving. And it’s not conventional, there’s a lot of positivity that they bring to it. FDCI collaborating with them is a huge thing because their ideology is the same. The belief system is the same. They want to create a platform and a voice for the up-and-coming talent. Now with the pandemic I feel, we need that push for everybody. This initiative will be a huge deal and everyone can get a platform to showcase their talent. It’s a great collaboration.

5. From being a Fashion Student to getting styled by others for movies, what kind of feelings does it evoke?
Oh my god! When I did my first feature film, I think Vikram Phadnis was doing the clothes at that time and I felt like I have grown up looking at their stuff and now they are styling me. And that feeling never goes away. Even today, when you wear designer clothes, especially when you have grown up around that. You know the effort of Indian craftsmanship. So, I can really appreciate it. I don’t know if everybody feels that way but being from a fashion world it’s a huge deal for me to wear the clothes, the in-season clothes, the new launches. It’s a very cool feeling. You feel so much pride when you wear the pieces.

6. Do you always like having a personal touch or style element to your clothes? Even when you’re getting styled?
Stylists have their own take and sense of style to things, no offence to them. And I believe firstly, you have to be very comfortable in what you are wearing and only then can you shine in the outfit that you are wearing. The principle that I always follow is, I am wearing this outfit, it is not wearing me. Even when there is something that is bought to me, I don’t want to be overwhelmed by the outfit. There are so many people in the fashion industry that I admire but I wouldn’t want to be overwhelmed by any outfit- that’s always been there. I do try to keep things fashionable but comfort is a very important factor. I know for events I’ll have to walk up-and-down, you’ll never see me in strange heels or something like that (laughs).

7. What is your pick- Fashion/Movies
Honestly, I don’t want to sound diplomatic and all but those two things, I cannot pick from. I mean these two things have become the lives of my life, so I can’t pick between the two. Both of them go so well together, I don’t feel the need to separate them. Like even in movies, if you remove costumes from them, it’s not the same. Costumes take you to a certain world where they take you to a different world especially when you’re doing something like a period film. Every film has a world and the costumes play an important part. It’s like these two have to be married together.

8. You’re a flagbearer for sustainable fashion, your views on it and how people can inculcate the habit?
There are these pieces in my wardrobe that have been with me for 17 years. I have dresses I bought 14-15 years ago. And if you’re the same size, there’s nothing wrong with wearing them. They look different with age. There are a few things in my closet that I still don’t want to get rid of because they still look as good, feel as good, fit as good. The thing with fast fashion is you buy it now and you wear it, it looks great but then it will just be lying in your cupboard. I always tell people buy clothes that you can always wear, you can re-use, restyle. It’s good for our environment and good for everybody. I strongly encourage that.

Neha Sharma also shared her style inspiration, fashion must-haves and fashion mistakes:

Top 3 Style Inspiration:

  • Kate Moss- The most amazing thing to happen to the fashion industry when I was growing up. Her style was effortless, minimalistic and I kind of related to her because she was like a 5’6 model who made it huge. With Indian Genes- 5’5/ 5’6 is the most you get and she kind of built that confidence in me that even if you’re not 5’9. You can be a model and be stylish.
  • Zendaya- I think she is really cool and I think she always pushes the bar.
  • Lady Gaga- For all the loud stuff she pulls off and those towering heels. She is effortless. Only Lady Gaga and pull off Lady Gaga.

Top 3 Fashion Must Haves:

  • A Good Pair of Blue Jeans- Cannot do without this.
  • A Black Dress- You can dress it up or down and is a classic.
  • A White Shirt- So many ways to style, it’s unreal.

Top 3 Fashion Mistakes:

  • Blonde Streaked Hair
  • Double Tank Tops
  • Low Waist Pants

Neha Sharma was last seen in the Ajay Devgn-starrer Tanhaji, The Unsung Warrior, and Illegal- Justice, Out Of Order series, which was released in May 2020 on Voot. She will next star alongside Nawazuddin Siddiqui in Jogira Sa Ra Ra.
