Mithun Chakraborty’s iconic 1982 starrer Disco Dancer is all set to be showcased as a musical stage show titled Disco Dancer – The Musical by director and choreographer Rajeev Goswami and presented by Suniel Shetty. The group has already performed some of its shows in the UK, which got a positive response. The musical is also a tribute to the late Bappi Lahiri, who had composed the music for Disco Dancer and also sang a couple of its well-known songs, ‘Yaad Aa Raha Hai Tera Pyar’ and ‘Koi Yahan Nache Nache’.
Recently, Bappi Lahiri’s daughter Rema Lahiri and grandson Rego visited the rehearsals of Disco Dancer – The Musical. Sharing her reaction on the same, Rema exclusively told Bollywood Hungama, “Firstly, I am missing my father a lot. I cannot imagine he is not here. But of course, woh amar hain because his songs are played everywhere. Ever since I remember, Disco Dancer and Namak Halaal have been in our blood. Music is in our blood. We don’t have anything else apart from music. It’s a great honour that Saregama has launched this musical and Suniel Shetty is presenting it.”
Disco Dancer – The Musical will see Arjun Tanwar essay the character played by Mithun Chakraborty in Disco Dancer. The show will be staged from April 14 onwards in Mumbai.
Speaking about the young crew of the musical, Rema added, “They have done so much of hard work. All of them are so talented; the whole crew; the way they are dancing at an international level. I am proud that Disco Dancer is a worldwide international famed movie. Daddy got a lot of awards in India and internationally, including China (for Disco Dancer).”
Composer duo Salim-Sulaiman have recreated Bappi Lahiri’s songs from Disco Dancer for the musical. “They have done very well,” said Rema. “They have not disturbed the songs. They have done it with all respects, for which I am very happy. They have recreated it by keeping Dada’s melody and rhythm intact. Hats off!”
During the course of the conversation, Rema recalled how Bappi Lahiri brought the disco genre in Bollywood. “When he was in New York in 1979, he went to a discotheque; there were no clubs back then. He saw everyone dancing with lights and to the discs. He got inspired to know what exactly this is. It was his first time in America. He thought of bringing this innovative type of music in India. And the story of Disco Dancer was also perfect to try this type of music.”
When one of the shows of Disco Dancer – The Musical was performed in London, Rema was present in the same city but she couldn’t catch the show. “I didn’t get the tickets. Can you believe? It was a sold out show. My friends later sent pictures of the audience dancing. They were having such a party,” she said.
When asked about her take on old, iconic songs being regularly remixed in Bollywood movies since last few years, Rema said, “We have to live in the present, as per the likings of today’s generation. They are liking these songs. They are played in functions like weddings and birthdays and on social media. For example, ‘Tamma Tamma Again’ with Dada, Badshah and Anuradha (Paudwal) ji. It depends on how you look at it.”
Directed by Babbar Subhash, Disco Dancer also starred Kim, Rajesh Khanna, Om Shivpuri and Om Puri.
