Sharmin Segal has been on the receiving end of online criticism regarding her performance in Heeramandi: The Diamond Bazaar. While her co-star Shekhar Suman defended the casting choice, his son and fellow actor Adhyayan Suman offered more direct advice to Sharmin. For the unversed, Sharmin’s portrayal of the demure character 'Alamzeb' in Heeramandi has been met with mixed reactions. Audience members have described her performance as lacking emotion and expression.
Adding to the controversy is the fact that Sharmin is the niece of Heeramandi creator Sanjay Leela Bhansali. He recently refuted claims that nepotism influenced the casting decision. In a recent interview with Bollywood Hungama, Adhyayan Suman, who also stars in Heeramandi, shared his perspective. He advised Segal to "not live in a bubble" and to "accept any sort of reality."
He explained the importance of self-awareness and perseverance in the acting profession. He encouraged Sharmin to engage with criticism and learn from it, suggesting that audiences are generally forgiving of actors who demonstrate dedication and growth.
While not directly praising Sharmin’s performance, Shekhar Suman, Adhyayan's father, expressed support for the actress. He believes the online criticism is "unfair" and suggested that some of her acting choices were intentional. Suman also defended Bhansali's casting decision, suggesting the director wouldn't have chosen Segal based solely on nepotism.
Speaking of the show, it started streaming on Netflix from May 1 onwards. Besides Shekhar Suman, Adhyayan Suman, and Sharmin Segal, it also stars Manisha Koirala, Sonakshi Sinha, Aditi Rao Hydari, Sanjeeda Shaikh, and Richa Chadha.
