Filmmaker Suparn Varma’s Haq received critical acclaim when it released in theatres last November. The film, which stars Yami Gautam and Emraan Hashmi, recently started streaming on Netflix. It has gone on to trend on no. 1 on the platform as it has been impressing both people from the film industry and general audience. Varma got talking about the film in an interview with us.
Haq falls into that rarest of rare films that changes lives. Did you ever expect this impact?
From the day I set out to make Haq, for me, it was to use everything that I've learnt over the years to start creating a cinematic legacy whereby you manage to touch the hearts and minds of audiences. And this was a very, very important topic. And luckily for us as a team, the kind of love that we have got from audiences across the world now, we can literally say that it's been a very, very emotional experience for us and audiences. It's a two-way process. And I think we are lucky that, you know, the movie gods blessed us. We got the right team, we got the right cast, and it all came together well.
It has won itself a massive following on OTT. Do you think Haq should have gone to digital from the start?
For me, Haq was always a cinematic experience to be seen in theatres and touchwood, a large section of audiences saw it in theatres and absolutely loved it. And we knew from day one that it's literally going to have two lives, one in theatres and a longer shelf life on OTT because, you know, OTT is where films kind of are there for a very, very long time. And Haq's journey has just begun and Haq has exploded, not even like a bullet, exploded like a cannon. It's like a massive burst that has kind of broken through everyone's screens. It's shot straight to number one in India, in I think 10 other countries, and it's reached the top 10 across the world. It's a number two globally watched film in a non-English language of Netflix. And this is in less than seven days and its journey has just begun. So, it's really heartening to see the kind of love and conversations that Haq is generating.
Tell me about your cast?
Yami was on board before even the screenplay was written. I narrated the story to Yami and she said yes and was waiting patiently for the screenplay. And the day the screenplay was given to her, her only question to me was, ‘Who's playing Abbas?’ And the first name that I had in my heart and mind was Emraan Hashmi and we went to him. And within a matter of hours after the meeting, I had his consent to play the role. I mean, it feels so nice to kind of have the world saying that this is Yami Gautam's career best performance, performance of a lifetime. It's Emraan's career best performance. I mean, they poured their heart and soul and these are reactions that you can't generate. They come from the heart, from audiences, from reviewers and it is what it is.
Suparn, Haq has changed the course of your career?
I think it's really helped cement my positioning in the film industry. The last five, six years have been very important in kind of taking me and my career to the next level with the advent of OTT, but with The Family Man Season 2 or Rana Naidu or Sirf Ek Bandaa Kaafi Hai. But after Haq, yes, there's nobody else but you to word it better than how do you see me as, but it is a place where one always aspired to be. And I really want to kind of tell my stories and entertain audiences and do this across languages, across countries and do it for a very, very long time. That's all I have ever aspired to and that's all I ever want to do is keep on learning and keep on creating and that's it, work with good people.
