Dipika Chikhlia of Ramayan fame says, ‘people are making a mess of the epic saga’; says, “You’re spoiling that whole impact of what Ramayan is all about”

Dipika Chikhlia portrayed the role of Goddess Seeta in the Ramayan which aired on DD National in the late 80s.

Known as one of the most iconic shows, the 1980s Ramayan which aired on Indian Television’s channel DD National, is considered to be one of the cult works of writer-director Ramanand Sagar even today. Dipika Chikhlia, who played the leading role of Goddess Seeta in this popular TV series co-starring Arun Govil as Lord Ram, has shared her opinions about the epic saga of Ramayana being made into a trilogy by Nitesh Tiwari, starring Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi in the lead.

While the magnum opus version of Nitesh Tiwari has been in the limelight for its extensive casting including the likes of Sunny Deol, Kannada superstar Yash, Lara Dutta, and other big names being associated with the film, actress Dipika Chikhlia has a different opinion. According to her the epic saga should not be remade. Voicing out her reason behind believing so, Dipika told India Today, "Honestly, I am quite disillusioned by people who keep making Ramayan because I don't think you should be doing it.”

She continued, “People are making a mess of it. I don't think people should be making Ramayan again and again because every time they make it, they want to bring in something new; a new story, a new angle, a new look.” Addressing the topic of Adipurush, which was Om Raut’s version of the epic saga that failed to garner a good response at the box office, Dipika shared, "Like for Kriti Sanon (Seeta), they gave her a pink-coloured satin saree. They gave Saif Ali Khan (Ravana), a different look because they wanted to do something different, creatively. But then what you are doing is you're spoiling that whole impact of what Ramayan is all about."

She concluded by adding, "One should not tamper around with religious texts. I don't think one should be doing it and just leave it aside. Just don't do this." She advised filmmakers to opt for new subjects like freedom fighters and share their stories to the world.

For the unversed, the film Ramayana is expected to have gone on floors about a month ago and photos of Ranbir Kapoor and Sai Pallavi, as well as of Lara Dutta, and a few other cast members had found its way on social media and was seen going viral. However, an official announcement on the movie is yet to be made.
