Dilip Joshi marked his big-screen debut in 1989 with the Salman Khan starrer Maine Pyar Kiya and went on to star in a bunch of Bollywood films.

Dilip Joshi's portrayal of the lovable and comical Jethalal in Taarak Mehta Ka Ooltah Chashmah has made him a household name in India and beyond, with fans praising his comedic timing and acting skills. His character's quirky mannerisms and catchphrases have become part of popular culture, and the show has consistently been among the highest-rated television programs in the country since its inception in 2008. However, very few know that before starring in TMKOC, Joshi was featured in a bunch of Bollywood films including the superhit Hum Aapke Hain Koun.

Reflecting on his journey recently Dilip Joshi stated that Hum Aapke Hain Koun came to him at a time when he was in need of money in the latest episode of The Bombay Journey. He asserted, “In 1992, my daughter Niyati was born. At the time I had Rs 25,000 in my bank account, out of which 13-14k went as hospital bills.”

He continued, “I was doing only a play at the time, through which I used to earn Rs 400-450 from one show. At that time, I got Hum Aapke Hain Koun. I thought now my life is set. But that film came, it became a super hit and I didn’t get any work after that.”

As the conversation progressed further, Joshi shared his experience of working with Salman Khan on his debut film, Maine Pyar Kiya. He recalled, “Maine Pyar Kiya was my first film, it had Laxmikant Berde, and Reema Lagoo. I had a very small role. I would mostly sit at the side. But when Salman got to know that I am from theatre, he would sometimes ask me, ‘Ye shot theek hua, ye theek tha? (Was this shot fine, did this happen correctly?)’ There was so much discipline on the set. I enjoyed it a lot.”
