“I could’ve hit him”: Satish Shah recalls fan’s insensitive request for jokes while his wife was in critical condition : Bollywood News

Veteran actor Satish Shah has opened up about the challenges of being typecast as a comedian. In an interview with CNN-News18, Shah said that he often feels like Indian audiences can't differentiate between the actor and the character he plays.

Shah recalled a harrowing experience when he was in the hospital with his wife, who was battling for her life. A person approached him and asked him to tell a joke, even though Shah was clearly in a serious situation.

The Main Hoon Na actor said, “They (Indian audience) expect you to be funny even when one is in an environment where one has to be serious. It happens, but one has to live with it. My wife was seriously ill, she was almost dying on the operation table. And I was very tense because we’d been married only for three months.”

The Sarabhai Vs Sarabhai actor further added, “I was sitting outside, very worried, and a guy comes to me and says, ‘Kya yaar, aap aise serious baithe ho, ache nahi lag rahe ho, koi joke-woke maaro (You look so glum, it doesn’t suit you. Why don’t you tell me a joke).”

As he continued, Shah stated that he could’ve hit him with a ‘knockout punch’ instead. He said, “But somehow, better sense prevailed, and I just walked off. But it’s part of the baggage we carry.”
