South Korean juggernaut BTS’ member Jin took the stage as a special guest at Coldplay’s world tour Music Of The Spheres in Buenos Aires to perform his new single ‘The Astronaut’ on October 28 in Argentina. The concert took place at River Plate Stadium and a live cinema broadcast of the concert was available worldwide. ‘The Astronaut,’ co-written by Jin and Coldplay, was released on the same day.

Before Jin arrived on stage, Chris introduced him on stage and talked about how the relationship between Coldplay and BTS was formed due to sheer love for music. Admitting the earlier prejudice of working with the Korean band, Chris said that the music BTS was different but there was no reason to not collaborate with them. The groups worked together on Music Of The Spheres track ‘My Universe’ in 2021. Chris addressed the massive crowd and said, “A few years ago, I felt like we had to play a certain kind of music all the time, we had to fit into a box – and I felt that way about my life also. And I met some good people and read some good books and met some great teachers, and they seemed to be happy. And the thing that made them happy was not having fear of what you don’t know and people you don’t understand yet – you just ask.”

He added, “And one way that really blessed my life – and our life as a band – is that about two years ago, someone suggested to us that we should work with a Korean boy band. [I was] full of judgement, which is often my first reaction, because I’m human. But after a while I was like, ‘Why do I feel scared about this just because they’re different?’ And so we went down this road and we did a song together called ‘My Universe’. And it’s turned out to be one of the most fun and fulfilling relationships that we have as a band, and it’s taught us so much about… Just embrace the other, rather than be scared of it.”

Talking about how Jin approached him six months ago to work on a new song before his mandatory enlistment in the military, Chris further said, ““And so, about six months ago, one of their members called me up and he said, ‘I have to leave the band in December [to join] the army in Korea because that’s the rules there. And he said, ‘I need a song that says goodbye to everybody for a little while, and tells them that I love them… And so I said, ‘Okay, we’ll do a song together.’ And instead of being worried about it, I feel so excited about it, so grateful for this relationship that we have with BTS. And then this song arrived, and I was like, ‘This is one of our best songs – let’s give it to this gentleman.'”

As Jin performed with Coldplay, the stadium sang along. In the middle of the song, he ran towards Chris Martin who waited for him with open arms. As he held him, Chris gave him a kiss on his forehead. At the end of the performance, Jin said, "And I love you ARMY, you all", bowed to the audience before he left the stage.

‘The Astronaut’ marks the second collaboration between BTS and Coldplay after Coldplay X BTS’ ‘My Universe’ released in September last year. As per latest update, the song sold a total of 700,954 copies on Friday, making the singer-songwriter only the third solo artist in history to surpass 700,000 sales with an album on the first day of its release.

This marks Jin’s first solo project since BTS announced in June 2022 that they were halting their group activities for now in order to focus on their solo endeavors. On October 17, the agency of the group announced that all seven members will enlist in the military for their mandatory service and will be back together in 2025. Before that, one can expect new music from all the members.
