Boman Irani had an insightful discussion at the Bollywood Hungama Style Icons Summit and Awards 2026, where he celebrated his 25-year journey as a film actor. His debut film, Everybody Says I'm Fine, released in 2001, and he became a household name two years later with his role of Dr Asthana in Munna Bhai MBBS (2003). Another important film in his filmography was Khosla Ka Ghosla (2006). Boman shocked the attendees as he confessed that he almost didn’t do the iconic film.
Boman Irani said, “I initially refused Khosla Ka Ghosla. I felt that I was the wrong person as it was about getting the milieu and ethnicity correct. You cannot nail anyone's ethnicity by learning the accent. That's not it. Hence, I didn't know I'd do justice.”
He admitted, “It was an amazing script that Jaideep Sahni wrote and which Dibakar Banerjee was to direct. They are Delhi boys. But they asked me to try. So, I went to Delhi and met the estate agents and sharks. I realized, 'This is fun. Why was I running away from it?'.”
Boman then shared a fascinating anecdote, “I went for the shoot and cut my hair really short. One guy came up to me and said, 'Yeh nainsaafi hai'. I asked him the reason. He replied, 'I gave a phenomenal audition. Even you would have said that I deserved the role'. I apologized for it. He asked me, 'How would you feel if a Punjabi man from Delhi plays a Parsi character and not you?'! I admitted, 'Bura lagega'.”
Boman added, “I am not a confrontational person. So, I asked him about his preparation for the role. He listed out his prep. I asked him to help me with it. He agreed. I used to sit and chat with him. I sponged off him.”
Boman Irani ended his answer by saying, “It was my biggest challenge and I love a challenge. It was probably my greatest victory because I pulled it off and I felt good about it.”
