The trailer of the action entertainer Bhaiyya Ji was launched in Mumbai in the presence of the star cast and other unit members. During the question and round session with the media, Manoj Bajpayee was asked about the tagline ‘Bhaiyya nahin Bhaiyya ji’. The actor opened up on the ill-treatment meted out to Biharis in our country.

Bhaiyya Ji trailer launch: Manoj Bajpayee opens up on the ill-treatment meted out to Biharis; shares the shocking instance of Delhi DTS buses: “It was assumed ki aage se chadne waala bewakoof hoga aur isliye Bihar ka hi hoga”

Manoj Bajpayee started by saying, “As far as I know, in bigger cities, people from UP/Bihar are addressed as ‘Bhaiyya’ in a mazakiya way. So, the line ‘Bhaiyya nahin Bhaiyya ji’ was added. It signifies ‘Don’t make fun of us. Give us respect’!” Amid applause, he added, “If all goes well and once the film succeeds, maybe everyone would love to be addressed as ‘Bhaiyya ji’!”

Manoj continued, “Shabana’s (Shabana Raza Bajpayee; wife) father used to say ‘If someone comments regionalism, caste, religion etc., then don’t react. It shows the mindset of that person. You should simply laugh at him and wonder ‘Kitna bewakoof aadmi hai’. Eventually, we are all Indians.”

The National Award-winning performer then narrated a shocking instance. “In Delhi, to get inside the DTC buses, you need to enter from the back door and exit from the front door. If some person mistakenly tried to enter inside from the front door, the conductor or driver would shout, ‘O Bihari, peechhe se aa’. That person might not even hail from Bihar. But it was assumed ki aage se chadne waala bewakoof hoga aur isliye Bihar ka hi hoga,” he said.

Manoj Bajpayee opined, “I used to not get angry, but I used to feel ‘Yeh soch hi galat hai’. And the beauty of our country is that people come from different parts of India. Look at the people in our film, for instance.”

Speaking of Bhaiyya Ji, Manoj Bajpayee revealed that it’s inspired by a true incident. “There was a second-year student in JNU, Delhi. He learned that his father was murdered. Hence, he went to his hometown in Bihar. After a few days, when he was about to leave, his mother said ‘Tu napunsak ho gaya hai. Tu wapis kaise ja sakta hai?’. Still, that son got on the train to Delhi. But two stations later, he pulled the chain and returned. He later killed six people.”

He also confessed, “I thought of it as an independent or middle-of-the-road cinema. But the conviction that this guy (points at director Apoorv Singh Karki) has in mainstream cinema, I haven’t seen that in any other person. Only that person can make the film who believes in it, not because he feels ki aisi film chalti hai. There were directors like Prakash Mehra and Manmohan Desai. They believed in such form of cinema.”

He also said, “When Apoorv told me his vision, I told him that I’ll get him to meet bigger stars and perhaps, they can do the role. He told me, ‘Nahin sir. Maine sabko slow motion mein dekha hai. Main aapko slow motion mein dekhna chahta hoon’ (laughs)!”

Bhaiyya Ji releases in cinemas on May 24.
