The controversial song Sarke Chunar, featuring Nora Fatehi and Sanjay Dutt, has officially been banned following widespread backlash over its suggestive lyrics and choreography.
Union Minister for Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw confirmed the development while addressing the issue in the Lok Sabha, stating that the decision was taken in line with existing constitutional limits.
“A ban has been imposed on the song. We must operate according to the reasonable restrictions under the Freedom of Speech. Freedom of Speech cannot be absolute, it has to be in the context of the society and culture,” Vaishnaw said.
The song, part of the film KD: The Devil, had sparked intense debate soon after its release, with many criticising its double entendre lyrics and allegedly vulgar visuals. Complaints were filed with authorities, and the controversy quickly escalated across social media and industry circles.
Prior to the official ban, the track had already been taken down from YouTube amid growing outrage. Reports indicate that multiple bodies, including certification authorities, were urged to take strict action against the song over concerns related to public decency and its potential impact on viewers, especially younger audiences.
The debate surrounding Sarke Chunar has also reignited conversations about censorship, artistic freedom, and the limits of creative expression in Indian entertainment.
Amid the backlash, filmmaker Prem’s wife, former actor Rakshita, also weighed in, questioning why similar songs in the past did not face the same level of scrutiny, highlighting the selective outrage surrounding such controversies.
As the discussion continues, the ban marks a significant moment in the ongoing dialogue between freedom of expression and cultural sensitivity in Indian cinema.
