Ranbir Kapoor's Animal, roaring at the box office, has stirred a debate online. While some hail its raw intensity, others criticise its portrayal of violence and alleged misogyny. Anurag Kashyap, a filmmaker known for his own brand of provocative cinema, recently weighed in on the controversy during an exclusive chat with News18 Showsha.

"I haven't seen Animal yet," he admitted, as he recently returned from Marrakech. "But I'm aware of the online conversations. Nobody has the right to tell a filmmaker what kind of films they should and shouldn’t make. People here get easily offended, even by my films. But I expect educated audiences to be more discerning."

Recalling the similar discussions that followed Sandeep Reddy Vanga's Kabir Singh, Kashyap champions the right to artistic expression. "Films can provoke or evoke," he states. "I have no problem with filmmakers who make provocative cinema. We can criticise, argue, and disagree, but we should allow them to represent their vision."

The filmmaker, known for his direct approach, reveals his approach to engaging with art that challenges him. "Once I watch Animal, I'll discuss it with the director," he shares. "I'll pick up the phone and talk to him. That's my style. Social media chatter doesn't interest me."

While Kashyap has not yet watched the film, renowned filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has already shared his review of the Sandeep Reddy Vanga directorial. RGV has heaped praises on Animal and called Ranbir Kapoor “superior” to Leonardo DiCaprio.

Speaking of the film, besides Kapoor, it also stars Rashmika Mandanna, Anil Kapoor and Bobby Deol. It was released on December 1. The crime-drama is also facing a clash with Vicky Kaushal’s Sam Bahadur.
