2 Years of Tadap EXCLUSIVE: “We had a lifetime of around Rs. 30 crores; Sajid Nadiadwala told me, ‘You have made a Rs. 100 crore film. In COVID conditions, if you can pull off this number, that means you have to multiply by at least 3” – Milan Luthria

Tadap (2021) completed two years on December 3. It marked the debut of Ahan Shetty and also featured Tara Sutaria in this Milan Luthria-directorial. It had impressive box office numbers considering it was released when the fear about going to cinemas was still present. Yet, it opened at Rs. 4.05 crores which was more than that of bigger star-cast films like Runway 34 (Rs. 3 crores), Jersey (Rs. 2.93 crores), Jayeshbhai Jordaar (Rs. 3.25 crores) etc. Not to forget, the 50% occupancy rule was also into effect in December 2021.

During the promotions of Sultan Of DelhiBollywood Hungama exclusively spoke to Milan Luthria and remarked that despite soulful songs, decent box office numbers and mass appeal, Tadap hasn’t got its due.

Milan Luthria said, “You are right. It has not got its due. It is possible because we were going through such a difficult time. There are times when certain things are not in the control of us filmmakers. I wish the film had been released at another point in time. We had to release it. Sajid bhai (Sajid Nadiadwala) and I were very concerned. We couldn’t sit on it any longer. It was a time when films were opening at Rs. 25 lakhs and Rs. 50 lakhs and there was a 50% occupancy rule. A section of moviegoers was scared to go into enclosed spaces. Yet, we opened at Rs. 4 crores and it had a lifetime of around Rs. 30 crores. The films then were collapsing at Rs. 10 crores.”

Milan Luthria revealed that after release, “Sajid bhai called me and said, ‘What had to happen has happened. But I can tell you as a producer of many years of standing that remember, you have made a Rs. 100 crore film. In these conditions, if you can pull off this number, that means you have to multiply by at least 3’.”

The veteran filmmaker further said, “I put a lot into the film to groom Ahan. I promised his father (Suniel Shetty) that I’ll take great care and present him in the best way that I know. I think I managed that to quite an extent. Pritam’s music was absolutely brilliant.” He sighed, “These are the things that are written in the stars. Do your best and leave the rest!”

Milan then added, “It was a lovely collaboration with Sajid bhai and his production house (Nadiadwala Grandson Entertainment). Ahan and Tara, meanwhile, were wonderful kids. The shoot was great. Ahan’s family was overwhelmed with the result. I guess the (release) time was horrible.”

The crucial intermission point was shot at Mumbai’s single-screen theatre, Central Plaza, which has now shut down sadly. Milan Luthria revealed that the first shot of the film was filmed in the South Mumbai cinema hall, “Anna (Suniel Shetty) came to the set to wish us for the first day. He said that his father had started his career in the Central Plaza cinema canteen. He was emotional when he told me, ‘I never imagined that you would be shooting here for Ahan’s first day. This is where my life started! We used to come here as kids to meet my father. It’s some divine intervention that you chose this place’!”
