Acclaimed filmmaker Anurag Kashyap has officially signed on as presenter of Delupi, Mohammad Touqir Islam’s political satire out of Bangladesh, giving the independent project a major international push.
A presenter credit that changes everything
The film’s team announced the news through social media, revealing that Delupi will now carry the credit “Anurag Kashyap presents ‘Delupi’. We could write paragraphs about what this means to us, but the truth is, no words can fully express how we’re feeling right now,” the team said.
The makers noted that for an independent Bangladeshi film, earning the trust of a filmmaker of Kashyap’s stature has been a powerful source of encouragement for the entire team. They thanked him for believing in the project and said they were eager to introduce Delupi to a wider international audience.
The team also credited the supporters who have followed the film’s journey from the start, writing, “Without your belief, encouragement, and unwavering enthusiasm, this journey might never have come this far.”
The Letterboxd review that started it all
Kashyap’s association with the film began after he watched Delupi and shared a review on Letterboxd, one that left Touqir visibly moved. Sharing a screenshot of the review on social media, the director wrote that he could not express his feelings after Kashyap watched Delupi and shared his thoughts on it.
In his review on Letterboxd, Kashyap wrote, “Power play at the smallest level in the village of Delupi, cut off from the rest of Bangladesh by floods following the regime change. Very humane and feels like our own backyard. Love it. A small village becomes a metaphor for the whole country. Rebuilding the dam is like rebuilding the country from scratch with no resources. Moved me in ways I can’t describe.”
A boost for independent Bangladeshi cinema
For a small, independent film built on limited resources, Kashyap’s backing is being viewed by the team as validation that stories rooted in local, regional realities can resonate far beyond their borders.
With Kashyap now attached as presenter, Delupi looks set to reach a considerably wider audience as it carries its story of a flood-cut village, and the country it mirrors, onto bigger platforms.
