Anubhav Sinha weighs in on Theatre vs OTT debate; says audience “need to explore newer kinds of films”

en Bollywood News Anubhav Sinha weighs in on Theatre vs OTT debate; says audience “need to explore newer kinds of films”

Filmmaker Anubhav Sinha criticises the labelling of films as “made for OTT” or “made for theatre” during his recent interaction.

In recent years, there has been a growing debate about the merits of watching films in theatres versus on over-the-top (OTT) platforms. While some argue that watching a movie in a theatre provides a unique and immersive experience, others contend that OTT platforms offer more convenience and flexibility. Speaking on the same note recently, filmmaker Anubhav Sinha shared his thoughts and stated that watching films on OTT is like “having coffee and not smelling it.”

It all happened during his interaction with Mid-Day. Sinha believes that while seeking audience approval, it is disappointing when good films like Faraaz go unnoticed. It is worth mentioning here that Faraaz, helmed by Hansal Mehta, was jointly produced by Anubhav’s production banner Benaras Media Works and T-series. He suggested that watching a film on OTT is not the same as experiencing it in a theatre, which provides a more immersive experience.

In his words, the critically-acclaimed director asserted, “While one seeks approval from the audience, one also wants the audience to identify a good film and back it. One is disappointed when they don’t go and watch a film like Faraaz, which was about youngsters and got great reviews. They need to explore newer kinds of films. It has become a convenient discussion that some films are made for OTT, and some for theatre. Watching a film on OTT is like having coffee, and not smelling it. In theatres, you can [fully experience] a movie.”

Coming to the professional front, the 57-year-old director is currently making headlines for his latest release Bheed. The social drama, shot completely in black and white format, features Rajkummar Rao, Bhumi Pednekar, Kritika Kamra, Dia Mirza, Pankaj Kapur, and Ashutosh Rana. It was released on March 24, 2023.
