Actor Anjum Batra is gearing up to reprise his role as Mintu in the upcoming second season of Maamla Legal Hai, and the actor has now opened up about his unique journey of stepping into the character with minimal preparation.

Known for his performances in projects like Amar Singh Chamkila and Wild Wild Punjab, Batra revealed that the transition between shoots happened almost instantly, leaving him with little time to prepare for his role in the legal drama.
Sharing insights into his packed schedule, he said, “I was shooting for Amar Singh Chamkila and didn’t really have time to prepare. I wrapped the film in March, and by the end of March or early April, we had already started shooting for Maamla Legal Hai Season 1. The character I was playing in Amar Singh Chamkila was very demanding, and Imtiaz Ali is extremely particular about everything. So that shoot wrapped quickly, and this one began just as fast.”
Despite the time constraints, Batra emphasised that the groundwork laid by the writers played a crucial role in helping him understand and build the character of Mintu. “The writers had prepared a lot of material for Mintu. They gave me references, real-life cases, and a strong foundation. I had read some cases, and they also narrated many, which I kept in mind while performing,” he shared.
Interestingly, the actor shared that much of the character’s depth emerged organically during the shoot itself. He went on to say, “As an actor, you discover a lot while performing. After shooting for a few days, I realised that this character could be explored in different ways. You keep pulling that thread, and the path becomes clearer. That’s how Mintu evolved.”
Batra also spoke about the collaborative environment on set, crediting director Rahul Pandey and writer Saurabh Khanna for encouraging creative input. “Director Rahul Pandey and writer Saurabh Khanna gave complete liberty. If you took an idea to them, they were always open to it. They encouraged inputs rather than shutting them down. And when you’re working with actors like Ravi Kishan, you don’t have to worry about anything”, added the actor.
Looking ahead to Season 2, the actor believes that the familiarity established in the first season has made it easier to carry the character forward. Batra continued, “In the first season, people got familiar with the character. That really helped in the second season, it became slightly easier. Now it’s about holding onto that thread and taking it forward”,
He also reflected on the strong audience response to the first season, particularly praising the writing and its rooted storytelling. “The audience loved the writing, especially the authentic courtroom conversations and the subtle sarcasm on the Indian legal system. Cases like the parrot abuse case and the monkey chase case really stood out because they were inspired by real-life incidents. People connected with them instantly,” he stated.
According to Batra, word-of-mouth played a significant role in the show’s popularity, with many viewers calling it an ideal binge-watch. “Many viewers called it a perfect binge-watch. And in this season too, we have some really amazing cases. I can’t reveal much, but we’re expecting even more from Season 2. The writers have done a fantastic job again.” Confident about the upcoming season, he concluded, “Just like last time, I’m sure people will talk about the show in the same way this season as well.”
