In a recent interview with Hauterrfly, actress Anita Hassanandani opened up about her past relationship with television actor Eijaz Khan. She candidly shared the struggles she faced and the reasons her relationship with him didn’t work out. Anita, who has been married to Rohit Reddy since 2013, admitted that her breakup with Eijaz was difficult, and it took her over a year to move on. "It was one of the first few long-term relationships of my life," she recalled, adding that she made significant changes to herself in an attempt to please Eijaz.
Mom’s opposition due to religious differences
Anita also touched upon her family’s reaction to the relationship, especially her mother’s concerns. Coming from a Hindu background, Anita’s relationship with Eijaz, who is Muslim, didn’t sit well with her family. “My mom had her concerns because of the cultural differences,” she said. While her mother did not outright forbid the relationship, her disapproval added another layer of tension. “We were good individually but weren’t good for each other,” Anita reflected, emphasizing that their differences became difficult to navigate.
Changing herself to please him
One of the most significant revelations Anita made was about how Eijaz tried to change her during their time together. She said, “If somebody is trying to change you to be in love with you, it’s not love.” She added that while she was in love at the time and willing to make compromises, she now regrets changing herself. “I wish I hadn’t changed so much, and just been myself,” she admitted. The experience left a lasting impact, making it difficult for her to move on.
Red flags Anita ignored
Reflecting on the red flags she missed during her relationship, Anita said one of the key lessons she learned is to never be with someone who tries to change who you are. She also advised checking a partner’s phone from time to time, explaining, “If he’s hiding his phone or keeping it upside down, something’s up.” Another red flag she highlighted was being distanced from family and friends.
Moving on and finding herself again
Anita shared how challenging it was to heal after her breakup with Eijaz. It took her over a year to get back on her feet. She relied on her best friend for support, even moving into her friend’s home to help her through the difficult period. “Every morning, she would pep me up,” Anita said, grateful for the love and support that helped her regain her confidence.
