Analysis: Shah Rukh Khan and Rajkumar Hirani chose an APT release date for Dunki; the film to have the ADVANTAGE of two LONG weekends!

On the evening of April 19, 2022, superstar Shah Rukh Khan surprised one and all as he suddenly dropped the announcement teaser video of his upcoming Rajkumar Hirani flick. Through this video, he entertained viewers as he was seen approaching the blockbuster director to work on his next film. He also informed fans that the film will be titled Dunki. The unusual title, the funny video and the coming together of these great personalities create a frenzy among the industry and moviegoers.

Towards the end, the video also mentions that Dunki would be released on December 22, 2023. Many in the industry and trade have been discussing how the makers have chosen an apt release date and how it can help them earn a huge moolah at the box office. Since December 22 falls on Friday, therefore Christmas holiday will fall on Monday, December 25. In other words, Dunki would enjoy a four-day weekend.

Dunki would normally see a drop from Tuesday, December 26 to Thursday, December 28 but since it's the year-end time and holiday season, the drops won’t be alarming. Meanwhile, the collections would rise once again in the second weekend, starting Friday, December 29. The second Sunday will be huge as the date will be December 31; usually, the collections rise on New Year’s Eve. And once again, Dunki will be at an advantage as January 1, a holiday of sorts, falls on Monday. As a result, Dunki will enjoy two extended weekends!

However, Dunki would face three challenges. Firstly, the word of mouth has to be positive and only then will these aspects prove advantageous. Secondly, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan is also scheduled to be released on December 22. It’s also a biggie as it stars Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff. Lastly, as has been the norm for a few years, some big film might also release on December 29, thus eating into Dunki’s business.

However, an industry insider told Bollywood Hungama why Dunki’s makers shouldn’t worry, “It’s a Rajkumar Hirani film. There’s no way the word of mouth will be bad. Even if it is, the audience would still watch the film at least once. That’s the kind of trust that Hirani enjoys. Secondly, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan clash won’t affect Dunki as it’s a very big holiday period. Both films, in fact, won’t eat into each other’s business and can thrive. Lastly, there’s no chance a biggie would release a week after Dunki and Bade Miyan Chote Miyan. Who would want to come and risk their expensive film a week after the release of such big movies? Hence, Dunki, in my opinion, is a winner and will boost Shah Rukh Khan’s stardom!”
