Actress Ameesha Patel has spoken out against the growing culture of online trolling directed at Indian celebrities, particularly after the recent backlash surrounding Alia Bhatt and her appearance at the 79th Cannes Film Festival.

Taking to social media, Ameesha shared two strongly-worded tweets expressing disappointment over how Indian stars are often criticized by their own audiences. Without naming anyone directly, the actress appeared to react to the recent trolling faced by Alia Bhatt after a viral clip from Cannes sparked online debate.
In her first tweet, Ameesha wrote, “Recent activities have clearly made it evident that our own INDIAN mentality has become to pull others down. We call ourselves one nation and united-but are we actually?”

In another tweet, she further added, “Actors here in INDIA are more badly trolled by our own people than Hollywood stars are within their country by their own people, which is so sad! Whether it's an Indian star's appearance or attire at big events, they sadly become targets of their own people! Such a shame!”

The tweets quickly gained traction online and divided social media users. While several fans supported Ameesha’s views and agreed that celebrities often face unnecessary criticism online, others debated whether public figures should also be open to scrutiny because of their visibility and influence.
The discussion gained momentum after Alia Bhatt was trolled over a viral video from the Cannes Film Festival 2026 red carpet. In the clip, Alia was seen confidently posing for photographs, smiling, waving at the crowd, and blowing kisses to the cameras. However, some social media users claimed that photographers appeared more focused on other international celebrities at the event instead of clicking her pictures.
The incident soon became a talking point across social media platforms, with users sharing memes, opinions, and criticism related to the actress’ Cannes appearance. Despite the negativity online, Alia responded to one comment with calm confidence.
After posting a reel showcasing her custom ivory silk saree-gown look from Cannes, a user commented, “What a pity, no one noticed you,” followed by a laughing emoji. Responding to the remark, Alia wrote, “Why pity, love? You noticed me :)”
The 79th Cannes Film Festival began on May 12 and will continue until May 23.
