It was way back in 1993 when Sajid Nadiadwala and Akshay Kumar came together for the first time withWaqt Hamara Hai. The film was a hit and from here began an association that is still lasting strong, despite more than two decades gone by. Between 1993 and 2016, Akshay Kumar and Sajid Nadiadwala have come together for as many as seven films, six of them being successes, and now one waits to see how big does their eight film together, Housefull 3, turns out to be.
“Clearly, this is one association that Sajid and Akshay cherish,” informs a common friend, “What bonds them well is not just a professional association but also a great personal equation that they share. Stories of their friendship are well known in the industry circle and the very fact that they have also delivered some of their biggest hits with each other only keeps the cycle going.”
This is pretty much proven by the fact that both Akshay Kumar and Sajid Nadiadwala had their first ever Rs. 50 crore [Heyy Babyy] and Rs. 100 crore [Housefull 2] hit together.
“All eyes are now on whether Housefull 3 will turn out to be their first Rs. 150 crore Superhit,” a trade expert comments, “The signs are all there. After all, the film is the first big comedy release of the year. It has been promoted aggressively, and is also seeing a grand release by Eros. All over the world, it is opening on a record number of prints. Moreover, the film is releasing right in the middle of summer holidays. Since it is a clean family entertainer and has a great recall value for the kids, the stage is set for the film. All it needs is a good rib tickling narrative by director duo Sajid-Farhad which would set the ball rolling.”
Sajid and Akshay would know better. After all, even though they reunited in Mujhse Shaadi Karogi a decade after Waqt Hamara Hai and instantly tasted success, there has been no looking back. There was a hurdle in the form of Jaan-e-Mann but the record thereafter has been good for the actor-producer ‘jodi’, what with Heyy Babyy turning out to be a clean hit, Kambakkth Ishq seeing the biggest opening ever for Akshay Kumar at that time and post that Housefull as well as Housefull 2 turning out to be good money spinners.
“Now it is time for Housefull 3, their eight films together, to do the talking,” an industry veteran comments, “Back then in the 70s and the 80s, it was Amitabh Bachchan and Manmohan Desai who used to deliver back to back family entertainers together. Now Akshay and Sajid, albeit in the capacity of a producer, are taking the trend forward.”
It would be interesting to see how their ‘Naseeb’ works out for Housefull 3.
