Aishwarya Rai Bachchan has once again reached Cannes and she made her first appearance on May 18, 2023. Known to create magic on and off-screen, the actress stunned the Cannes red carpet in her silver outfit. Prior to that, she sat down for interviews and talked about the success of the PS-2. In the interview, Aishwarya spoke about her dual roles in Mani Ratnam directorial Ponniyin Selvan: II (PS2). She played the role of Nandini and her mute mother Mandakini Devi. In an interview, she was asked why Hindi cinema is not offering her in-depth roles.

In an interview with Film Companion, Aishwarya was asked, “Why aren't we, as in the Hindi cinema, offering you roles with such complexities, such depth? Look at what you brought out and what you did with it (her roles in PS2).”

She responded, “Well that's a silent question I think everybody normally ends up asking. We are all creative people. When something turns out so good and feels so right, creatively for the people working on it, as well as for the audience, that's the response it evokes. I think one of the most beautiful and most rewarding moments is when questions like these arise for the actors, the leading ladies.”

Speaking to Film Companion about her experience of working with the legendary filmmaker Mani Ratnam and how he’s able to tap into something that many filmmakers can’t, Aishwarya said, “Mani, because he has worked with me so often, he’s always like, ‘You can do it’.” On her own working process during the Ponniyin Selvan films, she said, “I’m always on sets with my notebook, looking like a student working on my dialogues and these were in Tamil, which was a different language for me, so I would constantly work on it and see how I would play the dialogue out.”

Ponniyin Selvan: II released on April 28 in theatres. The film also starred Vikram, Trisha, Karthi, Jayam Ravi, Sobhita Dhulipala and Aishwarya Lekshmi.
