As Gully Boy completes seven years, the film’s influence on contemporary Hindi cinema continues to be discussed. Among its standout performances was Vijay Varma’s portrayal of Moeen, a character that resonated strongly with audiences and marked a turning point in the actor’s career.
Directed by Zoya Akhtar, Gully Boy starred Ranveer Singh and Alia Bhatt in lead roles, but Vijay’s supporting performance drew significant attention for its emotional depth and authenticity. Moeen, Murad’s closest friend, became one of the film’s most remembered characters.
Reflecting on the film’s release and the sudden visibility it brought him in an interview Bollywood Bubble, Vijay said, “When this film came out in the theatres, I was shocked actually. I had no idea what a successful film can do to you. So Zoya was like — I'm going to watch the film at Gaiety Galaxy, you want to come? I said, yeah, I'll come. I came out of Gaiety, and for the first time I got papped. And I didn't realise that they were all saying something, I couldn't understand at first, but they were all saying their own version of ‘wade wade wow wow’ (the iconic scene) you know. For the next couple of years, it was just that.”
While the commercial success of the film introduced him to a wider audience, Vijay says it was the emotional weight of Moeen’s arc that stayed with him. Recalling one of the most powerful moments in the film, he shared, “I think it happened in the jail sequence. Both Ranveer and I felt it. There’s a scene where he comes and says — I’m going to tell the police that you are innocent… And Moeen is like — You have a future. You have a dream. I don’t have anything. I was supposed to end up here. You know, that moment… in that silence, I felt like this man loves me the most and that broke me.”
Over the years, Vijay Varma has gone on to build a diverse filmography across cinema and streaming platforms, often choosing layered and unconventional roles. However, Moeen remains a defining chapter in his journey — a character that not only connected with audiences but also positioned him among the most promising actors of his generation.
