Filmmaker Neeraj Pandey’s Aiyaary completed seven years yesterday. Starring Manoj Bajpayee, Sidharth Malhotra and Rakul Preet Singh in pivotal roles, the film was a drama with the backdrop of the Indian Army. Bajpayee spoke to us on the film’s seventh anniversary.

Manoj, you have always considered Aiyaary an honourable failure
Aiyaary is very special for many reasons, first and foremost is the manner in which Neeraj Pandey has written the script, the way he formatted the happenings in the script.

It was based on a true story?
Yes, it is based on few true incidents. But the way Neeraj gave it a look of a fiction and the way he created the relationship between my character and Sidharth Malhotra's character…. those were the things were really, really beautiful.

You seem very impressed by Neeraj’s writing skills
I have never seen or heard anything like those scenes that he has created on the screen or on the paper. Also, working with Neeraj Pandey is always such a pleasure. To work with that kind of a mind who is very, very clear about what he wants from his actors and the kind of preparation that he makes you go through that makes the shooting so remarkable. Just to spend some time with him on the set is quite a learning in itself.

Neeraj insisted on casting you as Lieutenant Colonel Abhay Singh?
He was very, very adamant and stubborn about casting me in that role and I also feel that somewhere I have put in everything into the film. I have made quite a lot of effort to play the character with sincerity. Neeraj was a big help.

The film didn’t get the success it deserved
Somehow, you know because of the constant change of the dates of the release, the audience was not aware as to when the film is releasing and it really hampered the film and its release but Aiyaary will always stay very, very close to my heart.
