One of the most loved films of Indian cinema, Sooryavansham (1999), completed 25 years on May 21. The film didn’t become a hit in theatres but has now achieved cult status on television. It is aired so frequently on Sony Max that it became a subject of memes, and it further added to the film’s popularity. The film starred Amitabh Bachchan and Soundarya in the lead roles with the former playing the double role of the father and son. On Sooryavansham’s 25th anniversary, we bring to you two fascinating trivia from the film.

What many are not aware of is that Soundarya and Jayasudha’s voices were dubbed. And it was none other than Rekha who dubbed for both the characters. While Soundarya played Radha, the love interest of son Heera Thakur, Jayasudha essayed the part of Sharda, the wife of the patriarch Thakur Bhanu Pratap.

Secondly, Sooryavansham was given a clean ‘U’ certificate by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and is a film one can watch with the whole family. Yet, when the film is aired on television, a ten-second shot of Soundarya gets cut. The shot is from the song ‘Peepal Ke Patwa’ and involves a drenched Soundarya dancing a bit seductively just before the second stanza of the song.

It is amusing to see it getting censored as the dance is not obscene or objectionable from any angle. In fact, the comic dialogue between Anupam Kher and Kader Khan borders a bit on vulgarity but is shown without any modification on TV.

Sooryavansham is the story of a traditional father and his tense relationship with his illiterate but obedient son. The relationship gets further strained once the son goes against the father’s wishes and marries an IAS officer. The son has a child and he acts as a catalyst between the two.
