One of the most-loved love stories of all time, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam (1999), completed 25 years on June 18. Starring Salman Khan, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan and Ajay Devgn, the film is remembered today not just for its casting, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s expert direction and emotional scenes but also its timeless music. The album consists of not just energetic tracks like ‘Nimbooda’ and ‘Dholi Taaro Dhol Baje’ but also the heart-wrenching song, ‘Tadap Tadap Ke’, sung beautifully by the late KK. A few months ago, music director Ismail Darbar shared fascinating trivia about the songs of Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and a lot more.

While talking to Hindustan Times, he said that he bagged the project thanks to singer Kunal Ganjawalla. “He randomly recommended my name to Sanjay,” he said. “I had composed an album that never came out, and I made Sanjay listen to those tunes during our music sitting. I made him listen to the title track, and he loved the song and complimented me.”

Yet, Sanjay Leela Bhansali didn’t take Ismail on board for as long as four months. This is when Ismail sent him an audio tune. Ismail revealed, “He heard it nine times and even cried. That song was ‘Tadap Tadap Ke’. That’s when Sanjay said, ‘Today I’ve completed my film’. It was such a powerful song. According to Sanjay, he now knew the film’s interval and the end.”

Ismail Darbar then talked about working with the blockbuster filmmaker saying, “Sanjay and I fought in every recording. But we also managed to strike a long-lasting friendship. He might fight with you, but he’ll listen to you too. We had a different kind of madness that I’ll always cherish”

Ismail also revealed in the same interview that the film’s title was locked thanks to him. The initial title was Duvidhaa. But since Ismail Darbar didn’t like it, SLB changed it to Afreen. At this, Ismail Darbar remarked that the Urdu title doesn’t seem right for a film based in Gujarat. Finally, Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was locked.
