1. Animal

This wasn’t an easy film to make. It was rated ‘A’ and was more than 3 hours long. Yet, the producers T-Series gave full support to Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s vision and even marketed it smartly. As expected, the Ranbir Kapoor-starrer took a flying start and even crossed the Rs. 500 crore mark. The success has given confidence to producers to back such unconventional films and to directors to make longer films.

2. Jawan

We have often seen Bollywood actors making South remakes. With Jawan, Shah Rukh Khan made an original Hindi film, that too with one of the biggest directors of Tamil cinema, Atlee. Due to the originality of the plot and association of Atlee, Vijay Sethupathi and Nayanthara, even the audience down South were excited to see it. And despite being a masala fare, Jawan stood out as it touched upon social issues beautifully, which our films had stopped doing. SRK’s monologue about voting responsibly was hailed, as it’s rare for a star to make such a statement.

3. OMG 2

The manner in which the importance of sex education was incorporated into a film about Gods was a huge risk for a country like India. The film faced brutal modifications from the CBFC. Even after receiving 27 cuts, it got an ‘A’ certificate. Thankfully, the audience endorsed the Akshay Kumar-starrer and its message and it was one of the biggest hits of 2023.

4. Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani

Karan Johar’s vibrant directorial venture seemed like a light-hearted entertainer. However, the audience was amazed as it talked about masculinity like very few mainstream films had done in the past. Ranveer Singh and Tota Roy Chowdhury’s dance on ‘Dola Re Dola’ got unanimous acclaim.

5. 12th Fail

The Vidhu Vinod Chopra-directorial told a very inspiring story most genuinely. It was not a conventional film and the veteran filmmaker told it the way he wanted to. Fortunately, the genuine effort paid off and it emerged as the biggest sleeper hit of 2023. Despite premiering on OTT, it is still running to packed houses in certain cities

6. Satyaprem Ki Katha

It’s rare for a mainstream love story to talk about the traumas of rape. This Kartik Aaryan-Kiara Advani starrer took up the challenge and told the story with utmost sensitivity. The audience accepted the film with open arms and made it a success.
