10 Years of Gunday: How this much appreciated Ranveer Singh-Arjun Kapoor starrer ended up in the bottom 250 list of IMDb, in the company of Deshdrohi, Humshakals, Race 3

Ali Abbas Zafar’s second directorial venture, Gunday (2014), completed 10 years on February 14. Starring Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra and Irrfan Khan, the period action entertainer, produced by Yash Raj Films, generated a lot of buzz before release. Hence, it opened well at Rs. 16.12 crores and also its release date coincided with Valentine’s Day, which gave the opening a boost. The film had more or less a positive word of mouth and had a healthy lifetime earning of Rs. 78.60 crores. Hence, many would be surprised to see that Gunday has a rating of just 2.7 out of 10 on IMDb.

Gunday begins in 1971 and is about two orphan boys, Bikram (Ranveer Singh) and Bala (Arjun Kapoor) who shift to India after Bangladesh’s creation and earn a living by looting coal. The opening voiceover (by Irrfan Khan) mentions the 1971 conflict in East Pakistan as the third war between India and Pakistan. This angered the moviegoers in Bangladesh who felt that the episode should have been referred to as the War of Liberation. The temper levels rose so high that they all united and decided to give 1 star out of 10 to Gunday on IMDb.

A week after Gunday’s release, Bollywood Hungama was the first one to report through a video about the low rating of the film on IMDb. This was a time when Gunday was the lowest-rated film on the website and had a rating of just 1.4. More than 15,000 users had rated the film which was unusually high for a Bollywood film in 2014. Jai Ho (2014), starring Salman Khan and which was released 3 weeks before Gunday, was rated by 5,000 users, though it was a bigger film in terms of cast and footfalls.

At present, Gunday’s rating has improved to 2.4 with 60,000 ratings. Nevertheless, it’s still one of the lowest-rated films on IMDb. If we consider Bollywood films with more than 4,000 votes, then Gunday is ranked in the 15th position. Kamaal R Khan’s laughable film Deshdrohi (2008) has the lowest rating of 1.2 (rated by 6,500 users) followed by the epic disaster Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag (2007) with 1.4 rating (rated by 7,000 users). Sadak 2 (2020) comes third with a 1.7 rating that too by a whopping 97,000 users. Sajid Khan’s Himmatwala (2013) and Humshakals (2014) both have been rated 1.4. Salman Khan’s Radhe (2021) has a rating of 1.9 and has been rated by a mind-boggling 1,80,000 people.

Many of the films that came in or after 2020 were targeted by the ‘Boycott Bollywood’ brigade. Hence, many of these films were not just negatively rated but the numbers of ratings it got were also unusually high. Had these films come before the movement began, they would haven’t been rated as low and also would have got lesser ratings. This trend was similar to what happened with Gunday, incidentally. In both instances, many had not seen the films and simply went on IMDb to submit a rating of 1 for ulterior motives.

However, the bottom line remains that all these films were widely panned and hence, in a way, it is understandable to see these films having such ratings. Gunday was not slammed as such and has a nice recall value. Yet, it continues to suffer.

The Hindi films with ratings of less than 3.0 on IMDb are as follows (figure in brackets indicate the number of users who have rated the film)

1. Deshdrohi (2008) - 1.2 (6,500)
2. Ram Gopal Varma Ki Aag (2007) - 1.4 (7,000)
3. Sadak 2 (2020) - 1.7 (97,000)
4. Himmatwala (2013) - 1.7 (9,200)
5. Humshakals (2014) - 1.7 (8,800)
6. Radhe (2021) - 1.9 (1,80,000)
7. Race 3 (2018) - 1.9 (48,000)
8. Student Of The Year 2 (2019) - 2.2 (22,000)
9. Baaghi 3 (2020) - 2.2 (14,000)
10. Heropanti 2 (2022) - 2.4 (27,000)
11. Joker (2012) - 2.4 (5,900)
12. Laxmii (2020) - 2.5 (59,000)
13. Khaali Peeli (2020) - 2.5 (10,000)
14. 1920: Horrors Of The Heart (2023) - 2.6 (4,000)
15. Gunday (2014) - 2.7 (60,000)
16. Liger (2022) - 2.7 (47,000)
17. Tees Maar Khan (2010) - 2.7 (14,000)

Note – Films with less than 4,000 votes have not been counted
