Six years ago, GARAM MASALA opened to a thunderous response in the Diwali week and the next release of Akshay Kumar and John Abraham together, DESI BOYZ, was expected to start with a bang. But the opening numbers were extremely mixed. Released in approx 2,200 screens in India, one of the biggest releases in recent times, the occupancy ranged from 30% to 40% at places, while several centres reported 75% to 90% occupancy as well. In fact, given the extensive and aggressive promotions, solid face-value and no major film to contend with, one expected DESI BOYZ to have a uniform start everywhere [80%+], but the plexes were not as strong, at places. The single screens, expectedly, were impressive.
The film will have to deliver big numbers on Saturday and Sunday, so that the weekend total is striking.
