RGV on Nana, ‘Ab Tak 56’

After making two horror films BHOOT [as director] and DARNA MANA HAI [as producer], Ramgopal Varma is ‘scared’. No, he’s not scared that ghosts would haunt him for ‘trespassing’ in their territory, but he’s scared and anxious to know the audience reaction to his films as the release date of both draws closer.

When you attempt something different, something that the viewer hasn’t witnessed before, you’re bound to be scared of the audience reaction, he confides, But, at the same time, I’ve had the satisfaction of not taking the trodden path.

While the hype surrounding BHOOT is tremendous, the craze for DARNA MANA HAI is also building up gradually. Directed by Prawaal Raman, the entire shooting of DARNA MANA HAI was wrapped up within months of its launch [the film went on the floors in mid-November 2002 and the film will hit the theatres in June/July 2003].

Prawaal is one director to look forward to, RGV tells me, He’s an amazing technician, besides being a compelling storyteller. Words of praise from someone as talented as RGV, speaks a lot of Prawaal’s abilities. Will Prawaal outshine RGV’s erstwhile assistants Madhur Bhandarkar and E. Niwas, only time will tell!
