Pak Cabinet to consider screening Indian Films

According to a news-report in Daily Times, a Pakistani daily [forwarded to this writer by leading exhibitor of Pakistan Nadeem Mandviwalla], the government of Pakistan is considering a proposal to screen Indian movies in the country and a summary of this will be submitted to the cabinet for consideration. The news-report states: In a written reply to a question from PML-N Rana Tausif, Minister of Sports, Culture, Tourism, Minorities and Youth Affairs Rais Munir Ahmed said, Yes, a proposal to permit the exhibition of Indian movies in Pakistan is under consideration by the government. A summary to this effect will be submitted to the Cabinet for consideration. If approved, the schedule and modus operandi of showing Indian movies in the country would be announced. The procedure will be decided in light of the government’s policy decision, he said. The minister said that this step would help revive the country’s fragile film and cinema business. He said that after this decision, the Indian film industry would stop producing anti-Pakistan pictures, which fuelled hatred among the people of the two countries. The decision would help the government raise revenue and would generate employment for technicians in related fields. The minister said that the government had been defamed by film piracy, while the financial benefits accrued to mafia. With the opening of film trade with India, this issue will also die down.
