LOTR creates history at the Oscars, sweeps all 11 nominations

The historic fantasy flick ‘The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King’ created a history of sorts at the 76th Annual Academy Awards ceremony. The film was nominated in 11 categories and won in all the 11 categories turning out to be the third movie to win 100% of its nomination after following “Gigi” and “The Last Emperor,” which both bagged nine-out-of-nine awards at the Oscars. Also it became the third film to bag 11 Oscars after “Ben-Hur” and “Titanic”. The awards it bagged included Best Film, Best Director (Peter Jackson), Best Editing, Best Adapted Screenplay, Visual Effects, Art Direction, Costume Design, Makeup, Original Music (Score), Music (Song) and Sound Mixing. The final part of the trilogy adapted from J.R.R. Tolkien’s Hollywood mythological fantasy and distributed by Warner Brothers has grossed $ 350 million to date and is playing in 1663 theatres worldwide in its 9th week right now. Billy Crystal, returning as host for the first time in four years, opened with his usual montage of nominees, having himself inserted into spoofs of key Oscar contenders, including Diane Keaton’s screeching nude scene in “Something’s Gotta Give.” He joked that for the first time, the show was being simulcast in Aramaic, a poke at “The Passion of the Christ,” Mel Gibson’s divisive religious film that took in $117.5 million in its first five days. The movie was done in Aramaic and Latin, with English subtitles. Crystal said that the first time he hosted the Oscars 13 years ago, things were different from today: “Bush was president, the economy was tanking and we’d just finished a war with Iraq.” The grandeur and scale of the ceremony was to be seen to be believed. It was broadcast live across globe, starting in India at 6:30 am in the morning today. The sweep of LOTR would not come as a surprise to its Indian fans. LOTR, steeped in mythological lore, would fit well with the mythological abundance in India, the land of Karma, Krishna, Mahabharatha, Ramayana etc. It is to the acknowledgement of this sweep, that IndiaFM has for the first time in its history of 7 years, is carrying an item from Hollywood. It is a cinch that this sweep will give a huge boost to LOTR collections, and its release in India is clearly a result of well thought strategy of using the Oscar fever to give a turbo charge to its collections. How many Bollywood awards do the same for a Bollywood movie. It is about time, that the Indian Bollywood Industry came up with something so universal and accepted as the Oscars.
