Films have always been subject to censorship not just by the governing bodies but also the public audience. The latest is that the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad High Court has issued notices to respective filmmakers and also to the chairman and secretary of Film Censor Board after it received a petition that alleged use of unparliamentary language in films like Bandit Queen, Gangajal, Omkara and Peepli Live.
The said notices were issued by a bench comprising of Justice Umanath Singh and Justice Virendra Kumar Dixit after processing a petition filed by a local lawyer Ashok Pandey, who sought cancellation of censor certificates to these films.
HC issues notice to four leading filmmakersIt is learnt that Pandey has also pleaded with the Court to direct the Union Government to displace all the members of the Censor Board including the chairman for allegedly violating the Cinematography Act.
The Chairman of Censor Board Sharmila Tagore, producers of Peepli Live Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, director Anusha Rizvi, producer-director of Gangajal Prakash Jha, producer of Omkara Kumar Mangat and director Vishal Bhardwaj and director of Bandit Queen Shekhar Kapoor, have all been issued the above notices for their films. Further the Court has fixed October 27 as the next date of hearing.
