Cannes Diary: Day 5

Calcutta Mail director Sudhir Mishra, along with the film’s lead actors Anil Kapoor and Rani Mukerji, held a media meet at the J W Marriott yesterday.

The movie, which has the City of Joy as its backdrop, is described as an emotional thriller. It’s about Avinash (Kapoor) who arrives in Kolkata in search of someone.

Bulbul (Mukerji), a typical Bengali girl, is in love with him. But this is not just a story about Avinash, Bulbul and the Calcutta Mail. There’s lots more the menacing goon Lakhan Yadav (Sayaji Shinde) and scheming politician (Satish Kaushik) who’s playing a villain for the first time.

At the meet Mishra, Kapoor and Kaushik spoke about Calcutta Mail and why it is a must-see. Mukerji was running late (like the Calcutta Mail?) and arrived in a baby pink suit and sparkling jewellery towards the end.

Shinde came with his mother Sulochana as he had just arrived from a shoot in Hyderabad and had had no time to catch up with her. She had come to meet him from hometown Satara.

The film also has Saurabh Shukla playing a pimp and Manisha Koirala who provides the kahani mein twist.

Incidentally, Calcutta Mail has been adapted from the Telugu film Chudalani Vundi, which starred Chiranjeevi and Anjala Zaveri. Hopefully it will get right on track.
