Teraa Surroor Review {4.0/5} & Review Rating

EXPECTATIONS

You expect nothing less than a fantastic score for Teraa Surroor. After all, right from Aap Kaa Surroor - The Moviee to The Xpose, music has been the highlight in each of the films where Himesh Reshammiya has brought himself in front of the camera. Now that the composer-singer-actor is at the helm of affairs for Teraa Surroor, which has lyrics by Sameer Anjaan with Anand Raj Anand and Shabbir Ahmed chipping in as well, you expect an out and out entertaining soundtrack with quintessential Himesh effect to it.

MUSIC

It is a sweet and simple beginning for the album with the opening track 'Main Woh Chaand' starting on a rather quiet note. In the same lines as 'Bas Tum Hi Ho' [Aashiqui 2] in terms of theme, genre and treatment, the song is further made special by Darshan Raval who makes a very good impression as a singer. The youngster, who has sung earlier for Himesh in Prem Ratan Dhan Payo and Sanam Teri Kasam, gets a big opportunity with the opening number of Teraa Surroor and ensures that he makes the song his own. Beautifully written by Sameer Anjaan, the song is a winner all the way.

In the same mode arrives 'Bekhudi' and yet again the team of Himesh, Sameer Anjaan and Darshan deliver. In fact it is good that Darshan gets his second song in a row as by now you start familiarizing his voice with Himesh, who is a singer himself, and after a point it registers well in your head. This one turns out to be an even better number than 'Main Woh Chand' and what makes it all the more special is the entry of Aditi Singh Sharma which happens 100 seconds into the song. The girl has been doing well ever since she burst into the scene with 'Raabta' [Agent Vinod] and this one is just the perfect follow up.

Once Arijit Singh's voice is heard in 'Wafa Ne Bewafai', you know that Himesh has taken a conscious decision to arrive pretty late in the album as a singer. Here, he goes with a conventional choice of singers and Arijit does well with this sad love song that is truly in the Himesh Reshammiya zone, when it comes to composing. In fact the hook-line of 'Wafa Ne Bewafai' is quite catchy and once Neeti Mohan and Suzanne D'Mello arrive on the scene as well, it turns out to be a good mix of voices in play. By this time, it is also established that there is a particular mood and melody that Teraa Surroor is set in, which is consistent.

Finally, Himesh Reshammiya brings himself on board as a singer and the song in question is 'Teri Yaad' which has guest Shabbir Ahmed stepping in. However, what pulls it back right at the beginning is the rap rendition of Baadshah which just doesn't fit into the kind of setting that Teraa Surroor had established so very well till this point. Yes, it is good to hear Himesh in the same mould as 'Aashiq Banaya Aapne', and also the sound of flute that plays intermittently. However, one continues to have Baadshah step into this fast paced number and how one wishes that melody returned into the fold.

Thankfully that does happen with the 'reprise' version which is much slower and flows well with the melodic mood that had been created all this while. Though this one appears right at the end, how one wishes that it made it much earlier in the soundtrack.

Meanwhile, another singer is brought into the soundtrack, what with Rituraj Mohanty coming behind the mike for 'Adhuri Zindagi'. A soft rock number which has a foot tapping appeal to it, this one too has love, pain, separation and togetherness forming the basis of it all. This one is the kind of song that makes for a high voltage affair in a concert.

As for those hunting for some nostalgia, there is 'Assalam Walekum' being brought back from Aap Kaa Surroor - The Moviee and fused into Anand Raaj Anand's chartbuster track 'Ishq Samundar' [Kaante]. Even after 14 years, the song sounds as fantastic as ever and with Himesh Reshammiya lending good support to Kanika Kapoor behind the mike, this one turns out to be largely entertaining all over again. That said, this one too could have done better if not for the English portions that are thrust into the proceedings at places.

OVERALL

Teraa Surroor turns out to be quite entertaining even as there were high expectations attached to it. Himesh Reshammiya promised a wonderful soundtrack for his romantic thriller and delivered well with a 36 minute soundtrack that doesn't have a single dull moment.

OUR PICK(S)

'Bekhudi', 'Main Woh Chand', 'Wafa Ne Bewafai', 'Teri Yaad' (reprise)
