Disappointing. The music seemed to want to be edgy yet have a fantasy/futuristic kind of feel to it. I give it points for the effort and for being different than most of what has come out recently on soundtracks (I'm SO tired of the hip-hop stuff!). The song "Khushi" was unusual and different in its Frank Sinatra "stardards" style, but rather disconcerting in a way and out of place among the rest of the soundtrack. The soundtrack just seems too much of a mish-mash of styles without any direction. Perhaps this will be explained once the movie comes out.

DRONA's Song is very delightful. All the songs has different mood and style and they are superbly composed with very different tunes of music. I think in recent times, we have not heard this type of music allbum with diffeent style of songs packaged in one album. It is a very nice and totally difffent mood and stryle of music. I would like others to taste the musice like they taste the nice and new food in restaurant. ALTOGETHER, VERY NICE MUSIC ALBUM

The music of yet another fantasy flick Drona is out in the stores now with just 20 odd days left before the release of the film . Drona as I said in my earlier posts is a testing film forAbhishek and his star power . The film’s music has been done by Dhruv Ghanekar who has done a decent job as a newbie . The Lyrics are by Vaibhav Modi . The movie has put on stake a lot of money and work since it has been into making since past few years . The soundtrack consists of Seven songs in total out of which Five are originals and Two being the remixes .

The first track on the album is the title track which has been mainly sung by Dhruv . This track is a fast paced track that kinda gives an introduction of Drona . The lyrics are very mediocre and even the basic tune is just good . The overall music is good but it has no newness to it . The tune is good but not good enough for a title track . This matters more since this song would feature in the background in several important scenes in the film .In my opinion there should not have been a Title track instead they should have kept some theme music . The song has a nice pacy nature to it and I hope even the movie has so . It should not be a Fantasy cum Melodrama . Overall the song is nice but could have been much better . The singers have not given much to the track and its music only does most of the job .

The next track on the album is “Oop Cha†which is on air these days . The song is a techno friendly one but the lyrics and music are very old sounding . This one sounds like those strange South-Indian songs which have even stranger videos . The lyrics are very amateur and have actually done no good to the song . The oop cha goes well with the tune but the tune itself is not that great . These kind of songs look good in the film but are not meant for listening purposes . Still it can be heard once . Sunidhi , a sincere request , please stop singing such songs !!! You have much more talent than this . Why waste it on such songs ? Let new girls sing such songs . You can find typical Sunidhi in this one and even she does her job like always .

The third song on the soundtrack is “Bandagi†which is a little better than the previous two in terms of both lyrical content and music . The vocals on this one are also bySunidhi and these are the type of tracks that she should now focus on . She sounds really good in this one as compared to the previous track . But theSunidhi of “Bhaage Re Mann†of Chameli was still missing . This track is more on the slower classical side and also has vocals by Roop Kumar Rathod who sings quite well . The song has been composed in an interesting fashion by the composer and has given it quite a modern classical kinda feeling . Overall this is the pick from the entire album .

The next track is “Nanhe Nanhe†by Sadhna Sargam which is a very slow track . This track makes me believe that this film would have a melodramatic angle and the last thing that I would want to watch is a Masala-Fantasy film . I just hope that even if there are some emotional scenes they are not done in typical old style and are put in a nice way . The song has been sung nicely by Sadhna Sargam and has a nice tune also . Overall again it is a nice but can be avoided kind of song . Would sense more in the film along with some situation .

The last track on the album “Khushi†sounds like a song straight out from the musicals by Disney . Even some of their Cartoon Films have similar songs . This track also has glimpses ofNanhe Nanhe in it . It is more a of a Jazz Band kind of song that were quite popular in the Hollywood’s Golden Days . Those who love Jazz Bands might like this song a little bit . A poor attempt mainlybecause of the very amateur kind of lyrics . They more sounded like a Hindi Translated version some of English track .

Then come the two remix tracks of the album out of which the Redux of Drona comes first . A very usual kind of Remix which has been sung by Sundhi instead and is almost same as original just with few DJ beats and effects . The last track on the album is a Remix of Oop Cha which is even more techno friendly than the original one . Nothing quite extraordinary about the track .

Overall , the album is nice but has not even a single song that can be called a winner . The song Bandagi is the best on the album but still is an average track . The lyrics are probably the weakest point in the entire album . The album in whole has not much to offer and would work more in the film rather than on its own . All the songs are just about average tracks with same old music .

Dhruv Ghanekar!!!!! Who? Even I was confused when I heard his name for the first time but when I looked for him I was shocked to know that he is an immensely endowed guitarist and was earlier with "Chakravyuh", the band featured in Rock On and also a part of the composer duo Ashu-Dhruv who composed music for movies like Khosla Ka Ghosla, Mera Pehla Pehla Pyaar, Broken Thread, White Noise and Bombay Boys and duo is also known for Blue Frog (to know more check https://bluefrog.co.in/cms/home.html) which promotes niche and non-mainstream music. Besides, Dhruv use to compose jingles under the label of Smoke Music and now with DRONA, he is making his debut as a sovereign composer. Drona, a much awaited socio-fantasy-adventure-mythological-action movie featuring AB ka baby oopss Abhishek Bachchan as a superhero, Priyanka Chopara as his love interest and Jaya Bachchan. Drona is directed by Goldie Behl (dreary Bas Itna Sa Khwab Hai Fame) and movie is set to release on October 2nd. Lyrics of the movie are by a newbie Vaibhav Modi. Here is my take of the music.

1. Drona: Album starts with the track Drona crooned by Dhruv himself in his husky baritone and suits the theme of the movie. His voice is a sort of amalgamation of two great singers Lucky Ali and Adnan. Besides lending his voice to this stylish-groovy-catchy anthem he also worked on the guitar for this track. This song is about the larger-than-life character of Drona and how he will save the earth. It should be the background title track that will keep on coming through out the movie. The music arrangement of song is appealing one with a lot of attractive reverberations, ups and downs, loops and sound effects, specially the use of chores and sunidhi who keep on humming drona drona which mix very well with the lead singer. "Kahin door sehra ke saaye mein, Machla tha koi toofan. Aur ek maseeha ke aane ka,Likh ke gaya elaan, Drona." In spite of having mundane lyrics, this song is worth hearing because of Dhruv’s peculiar voice and finicky musical arrangements specially the use of guitar where he proves his mettle aptly.

Drona REDUX: In this track the singers changed their positions and finally Sunidhi got hold of centre mike and Dhruv takes a backseat giving his voice to Drona Drona only. This track can also be classified as a remix track due to disc beats attached with the song. Though sunidhi did an OK job but some how the earlier version sounds superior because of the invigorating and calm touch of Dhruv’s voice.

2.Oop Oop cha: Next track is Oop Oop Cha. The starting of the song is quite attractive where Dhruv used very interesting instruments with lots of metallic sounds and synthesized notes along with flute that give song a pleasant starting and then queen-of-item-numbers Sunidhi holds the center stage for this dance number along with Nandini Srikar. The USP of this track is an interesting orchestra arrangement that give the song needed thump with the use of metallic flute tone and African-calypso-rap repercussion. But but but here comes the culprit…the ordinary proletarian lyrics that destroy the charm of this techno-friendly-dance-track. But one thing is true that Priyanka is looking HOT!!!!! and that would be the only attraction that can save the song otherwise it would be a listen and forget song.

Fair Play mix: this song is same as the older one with additional rap by Bob Omulo and with more electronic sounds but the output is same……. “DUHH†

3.Bandagi: After trying his hand on western instruments and metallic flutes, Dhruv tried soft sitar and tabla reverberation in this sweet-romantic-love-ballad “Bandagiâ€. This semi-classical-romantic track is crooned by Sunidhi (at very low pitch) and Roop Kumar Rathod. The best thing about the song is minimal use of keyboards and signing taking the lead. Even the lyrics of this track are apt. Roop Kumar Rathod’s proves his mettle through high quality singing and gives his best to this track. Use of flute, sitar, jaltarang, and tabla along with the background alaap gives edge to this song and make it feel-good-to-ear type of song. This song will be a treat for the lovers of soft music. “Pal chin Pal chin Uljhi Uljhi ek raina Dhadkan dhadkan bhikhre bikhre se chaina Milon chali hai gum si ye khamoshiKitna bhi samjhaun mann ye mane ne Teri bandagi…Jeene na jeene na de teri bandagi†

4.Nanhe Nanhe: Next track “Nanhe nanhe†is a tranquil and pleasant lori in sugary vocals of an ultra mellifluous Sadhana Sargam along with Nandini Srikar. Sadhana’s control over her vocal is amazing and in song she sounds like Lata in’Ek Tu Hi Bharosa’ at places because of the alaaps and beautiful change in the pitch. This is going to be one of the best Lori of present time due to superb lyrics and use of sweet-sounding metaphors which gives it a distinct identity. Dhruv has brilliantly fused Indian raags with western instrument. The best part of the song is the excellent use of the flute at the concluding part. Loved it “Nanhe nanhe taron jaise naina, taron jaise pyaare pyaare naina nainano me chupa ke rakhe, meethe sapne sapno ka shor meeche, to jo pakon ke neeche sapne churain tere chaina, Nanhe nanhe taron jaise naina†

5. Khushi: The last track of album is Khushi which is a Jazz track crooned by Shaan along with ample support from Suzzane D’mello, Francois Castellino, Dean and Sunaina Gupta. This is a conversation-type-masti with lovely use of saxophone, trumpet and drums. This song will surely remind you of title track of “Jaane tu ya jaane na†but this track does not have that appeal in it and somehow Shaan’s voice is not suiting this song. Lyrics of the song are on philosophical side as "Raat aur hum saath mein Ro liye Has diye. Aur gunguna ne lage."

My verdict: What I thought about the music of DRONA is that it would be GRAND but what I heard is interesting but not Grand. Few of the songs are good and they will find their audience. The most important thing I observed that each track of drona has two singers a lead singer and a backing one (who is more prominent than the chorus singer) and this really add the charm to the song, be it alaap of Sunidi in the title track or Nandini Srikar supporting Sadhana Sargam. Besides, I can also feel the touch of A R Rehmaan on the music of DRONA specially in Nanahe and Khushi. So due to the unconventional music arrangement and score Drona sounds different from the league but still fails to make its impact.

The music credit for the album throws a duo’s name "Ashutosh-Dhruv".. Who??? I have not heard about them much either. The Google says they are in the industry for long now and have done some songs and jingles. And, yes they have their own band. Hmmm... Impressive.

So.. A new name, I was expecting to hear something different!! DIFFERENT.. I know it’s a crime to expect something like this. Indeed a Big expectation for Hindi movie, though at least "Thoda Hatke" was all I wanted. Was my wish fulfilled? Not quite. We have been hearing similar music in recent times… Did I say it sounds like Pritam’s music?

But, anyways I am more interested in listening good music; I care least, if it was picked up from somewhere. At least I heard it, thanks for the Inspiration that our music directors get so often.

Drona – Ok, the best thing about this title song is Dhruv’s voice. Fresh, Husky and Luky Aliish. The song is pretty ok title song, because as we know title songs have their own limitations. The music is peppy. 3.5/5.0

Oop Cha – An attitude song with not much of attitude from Sunidhi, but the song is just another regular song. Not much to write about. And, they have made a remix of this song too. 2.5/5.0

Bandagi – A slow and supposedly soothing one. Sunidhi has done justice to song so has Roop Kumar Rathod. The song is good, but you have the feeling that you have heard it before. 3.25/5.0

Nanhe Nahe – Sadhna Sargam has given this Lata Aunty’s feel to the song. A typical "Mamma Sunaye Kahani" song. Good hearing. 3.0/5.0

Khushi – Shaan, Wow! You have very few singers in industry with this smooth ‘makkhan’ like voice. Decent song, only because Shaan has sung it. Again, music is an ordinary one. 3.0/5.0

Drona Redux – The remix is good and Sunidhi has rendered it quite as well as Dhruva. Good run of the mill song. 3.5/5.0

Oop Cha (Remix) – Why do they name the remixes with strange sounding names. Now this is called "Fare Play Mix", seriously, I don’t know why. May be, just to make it Different. 2.0/5.0

Overall, the album is quite ordinary. Let’s see how the movie fares.

I have always been a baby fan of AB Baby, so to promote him, I bought the album anyways. The other reason is that Goldie Behl is husband of my childhood crush Sonali Bendre, so just to keep her happy. ;)

If you are not either of these, please. Don’t Buy Plastic.. Save the World..

Disclaimer: I am just a layman and have ordinary ears. I do not have any expertise or whatsoever in music. This is just what I feel about the music of this album. The people associated with this album have spent their life making music. Please respect their passion and buy originals to keep them motivated to make much more beautiful music.
