Well, I would like to start off by saying that Anjaana Anjaani is the first movie I have gone to see on its first day. Not the first show though. But I benefitted in another way due to that - I could not read/watch any reviews, so I entered the movie hall with a completely clean slate. The biggest reason that made me want to see the movie in a hurry are the songs. While we have already had I Hate Luv Storys, another movie which had great songs (incidently Vishal-Shekhar gave music for IHLS too), Anjaana Anjaani feels like a complete album, with a song for every mood. The second was, surprisingly, Ranbir Kapoor. He has been on somewhat of a roll, beginning with Wake Up Sid, then APKGK, and then Rajneeti. Three brilliant performances and he did not disappoint with his fourth as well. The final reason - Priyanka and Siddharth Anand. Priyanka, of course is a seasoned actress now, and I dont expect any of her performances to let audiences down and Siddharth, despite Ta Ra Rum Pum, has always shown a promise of making movies which are off the beaten track. The start of the movie itself (yes, some people might find the start a little slow) shows what lies ahead in the interaction between Ranbir and Priyanka. Starting the movie by showing the lead pair attempting suicide is What I felt was a brilliant story idea. From the days of QSQT, when the hero and heroine would die for their love, to Anjaana Anjaani, where they attempt to commit suicide - wow. What follows for a few more minutes is extremely predictable. They try various methods to commit suicide together and fail. Then they sort-of agree that its a sign that they are not meant to die right then because of a reason, and so they make a pact that they will commit suicide on December 31, after living together for 20 days by jumping off the very bridge where they met for the first time. What then follows is fun, because they decide to fulfill whatever wishes they can. The fun is interrupted by something dramatic (or melodramatic, if you please), which makes Priyanka and Ranbir tell each other the reason why they want to commit suicide - Priyanka was cheated upon by her childhood sweetheart Zayed, and Ranbir is a now bankrupt and unemployed due to the stock market crash. Following that, they decide to go to Las Vegas. More fun/adventure happens on the way. Incidents in Vegas make both of them realise they might be falling in love but they also are compelled to not tell this to one another. Then while returning to New York, Ranbir decides to do the right thing while Priyanka is asleep. The choice he makes is painful for both of them, but neither says anything. The Las Vegas trip has been compared to the DDLJ Euro trip in many reviews and feedbacks, which I felt was erronous, because here they actually travel because its Priyanka's wish, rather than taking an expensive holiday roaming all across the continental USA. In fact, when they do travel to Vegas, they do not have any significant amount of money, which I thought was rather brave of the director. What actually happens at midnight on 31st December is very predictable, true, but it is in such a way that it is not brain-defying logic and it can/will be loved by the audiences. Or maybe, a few potions of the film are predictable. However, that should not, and does not, make a difference in its quality. It is a sincere and heartfelt effort by the whole crew of Anjaana Anjaani, and it touches you as so. The cinematography, lyrics, music, story, screenplay, dialogues and direction deserve tremendous credit, as do Ranbir and Priyanka (and maybe Blush, the car too). In fact it is to the credit of the two actors that the film looks and feels and is so good. And the key to that performance is that they transform themselves into the character they are playing. SO, from frame one, you have Aakash on screen, not Ranbir Kapoor, driving a Mercedes or some super wheels like that. And it is Kiara, and not Priyanka, that infuses energy and charm in the first half. How I wish more actors would be so committed to their characterisation. Praise also goes out to Zayed Khan for the underplayed performance. It was the first time I discovered that Zayed could also 'not shout' in every second scene. But there is one thing that audiences might complain of; and that is Ranbir playing the 'guy who hides his feelings from the girl he loves' a little to often recently. It might also appear like a combination of Wake Up Sid and APKGK (come to think of it, its similar even to Jab We Met), and there may be some justification in that too, but neither of those movies was such a heartfelt (read pure/out and out) love story. So, those who have always loved to watch a love story on screen are certainly going to get more than there tickets worth from Anjaana Anjaani. And those who complain that about the predictability factor, just remember that DDLJ was not the first movie with a love story in it.....

When it comes to the response to Anjaana Anjaani - it seems like a love-hate affair. People who liked it loved it and people who disliked it hated it. This somewhat marred my impression of Anjaana Anjaani as I sat in the screen waiting for the opening credits to roll. But I am glad to say that I enjoyed it and I enjoyed it primarily because I understood what director Siddharth Anand and fellow screenwriters Mamta Anand and Advaita Kala were trying to say. Anjaana Anjaani may be listless, it may be plotless but what holds the tremendous journey of events together is a wonderful message that no matter what garbage life kicks at you - it's always worth living. Akash is an overambitious businessman who, by borrowing a multi-million dollar loan, takes down his whole company as well as his friends. Seeing no future for his life, Akash heads for the bridge only to meet Kiara, a lovelorn and incredibly drunk girl, also bent on ending her life. This is how they meet and from then on continues a journey on which Akash and Kiara anticipate living a lifetime all the way up until New Year's Eve - the day they decided to end their lives. Anjaana Anjaani features a touchy topic: suicide. It is the very beginning of the film that a potential lover or potential hater would make their verdict. You could either say it'll be interesting to see what happens or you could either walk out and say bogus - but by walking out you've missed out on a message that life is never pointless and can be just as enjoyable - should one give it a chance. You also take a while to warm up to Akash and Kiara as they aren't instantly likeable. In fact both of them are whiny and hormonal, just as you'd expect from two people who are suicidal. But you've got to empathise to sympathise - you have to put yourself in Kiara's shoes who was badly cheated on by her soon to be fiancée and the now penniless Akash, who has no future except paying a ridiculously large loan off. But as they joke as they laugh and dance their last days off, you realise and think all is well. The film is inventively funny in a very Imtiaz Ali way and Siddharth Anand doesn't just depend on his characters, he depends on motifs too. Note the blood dripping down Ranbir's face, the scene where Priyanka cuts her hair off in despair and the scene where Ranbir and Priyanka stare at each other in silence before kissing. Siddharth has really improved. I would agress that Anjaana Anjaani is a perfect crossover vehicle for Indo-British or Indo American audiences. The hoi-polloi would prefer Robot and that's fine, but Anjaana Anjaani is an enjoyable, emotionally resonant and funny film with electrifying performances and a nice message buried at the crux. Priyanka and Ranbir have both put forward their career best performances. Ranbir perfectly underplays his character throughout and that in turn makes his performance believable and natural. Ranbir has shown various shades as an actor and being the romantic hero is just one of his shiny assets. Priyanka is a complete and utter revelation. Post Fashion, there's no stopping Priyanka in terms of her performances and in this film she steals practically every scene. Note her in the scene where she cuts off her hair, note her expression when she asks Zayed for forgiveness and her performance on the bridge is brilliant. Cinematography is vibrant and eye-catching. Chandran saab has done a fantastic job yet again with lush colours proving to be a feast for the eyes. Music by Vishal Shekhar is the best of this year and is sure to win over award shows unless they buy into the A.R. Rahman monopoly. Overall, Anjaana Anjaani is a modern film that requires a brain to get what it is. It's funny, it's emotional and it's romantic - but what is key is the message that everyone should live life and give it a chance because Aas Paas Hai Khuda :)

Everybody claims to be different; everybody claims to be great, but not every claim is correct. The funny thing which these claims actually do is to associate expectations with a particular end-product. If these expectaions are met, the product automatically wins teh heart, but if the product falters on these expectatoins, the it leaves a bad taste; it leaves one wondering why did one ever believe the authenticity in the claims. "Anjaana Anjaani", throws the viewer in a similar paradox. before its release, the film was claiming to be "the greatest and the strangest love story". Well after watching the movie, i do agree with half of this claim...it is INDEED VERY VERY STRANGE. "Anjaana Anjaani" is actually a big example of a "WANNABE" which tries hard to be different, yet at the core, it ends up being nothing but a normal run-of-the-mill film with a slight variation in the premise. And that variation too was not good enough to establish itself in any decent context. I mean how pathetic it was to swallow the light-approach they tried to associate with the suicide thing. Such a serious issue presented in such a goofy manner ... i dont find myself accepting the catch. Well, being honest, actually it is quite difficult to associate one particualr verdict with the movie. In spurts and portions, the film sometimes actually starts making you believe that whatever lousy was there has passed and now the remaining movie will compensate the bad experience... but Alas, this never happens. For the most of its unreasonably long run-time, the movie stays confused over where it wants to go ... it keeps on trying to be different, yet it keeps on falling in the same pit where numerous of its predecessors fell ... that is ... the same ol' heart broken protaganists, the same ol' onscreen couple who keep on believing that they are just friends and finding in the end that they were always made for each other. There is also the beaten-to-death idea of a thrid hero who messes things up with cheating his about-to-be wife and in the end making her realize that he understands that she is in love with someone else. Haven't we seen all this many many times ... then why try to convince us that we are watching something for the very first time. To give the credit where its due, the perfromance are highly impressive. Ranbir is fabulous once again. He is adorable and beautiflly under-plays his roles within the reasonable limits. Priyanka is a mixed-bag though ... she is simply superb in the emotional scenes and some of the funny ones as well ... but occasionally goes over the top, just trying to be extra cool and funny (which actually was not required by the situations). For me, Zayed in the most pleasent surprise of the movie, this is the first time when he has ACTUALLY ACTED. he is restrained and decent (though his role is as weak as that of rahul khanna in so many similar movies). The second possitive is the music by Vishal Shekhar. The tunes are amazing, but the song placement of some of the numbers adds into the unasked longer runtime. Cinematography is brilliant. As for direction, well I was never a fan of Sidhart Anand, and this film doesn't improve my opinion about him at all. Just like his films, I mean this sort of stuff can be delivered by any of the huge croud of new-age directors. The biggest fun-shreder in this movie is the screenplay. The screenplay is not at all catchy. Every now and then, the film plunges into deep abysses of being dragged. The end-result of the movie could've been much better if the movie was at least 25 minutes shorter in its running time. There are more than a couple of patches where the screenplay starts annoying you without a reason. Well overall, this reviewer is quite heavily disappointed by this latest effort of Sidhart Annad. After watching al of his movies (Salam Namstey, Ta Ra Rum Pum and Bachna Aye Haseeno and anjaana anjaani), the best suggestion in can give to Mr. Anand is .. "Sir please stop trying to prove your versatility and please start focusing on script and screenplay. You need substance and then you are capable enough to tranform it into a master piece with your ability to apply gloss. My Rating: 2.5/5 (honestly speaking, if not for the performances of the lead pair and the music, i would've given it maximum 1/5)
