Telangana single-screen theatres to shut down temporarily, reveal reports

Amidst a prolonged dry spell in the Telugu film industry, single-screen theaters in Telangana have reportedly decided to temporarily close their doors for nearly two weeks. This decision was taken considering the notable decline in audience’s turnout since the beginning of the year, particularly after Sankranti 2024. The lack of major film releases coupled with major events such as the ongoing cricket championship, Indian Premier League aka IPL and recent Lok Sabha elections have contributed to dwindling theater attendance.

According to sources in these reports, it is being said the summer season typically sees a bustling atmosphere in theaters across Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, but it has been learnt that the year 2024 has proven challenging for many theater owners, particularly those operating single-screen venues. Going by the recent record of releases, it has been noted that both big-budget and smaller productions have failed to resonate with audiences, adding to the industry's struggles during this period. Taking all this into consideration, The Telangana Theatre Association has announced plans for the shutdown, which is scheduled to commence from May 17. It is anticipated that this closure may last for a duration of 10 days to a maximum of two weeks, since reports also suggest a potential reopening will be happening around May 26 or May 31, depending on the releases.

 

As per these reports, all eyes are currently set on the Vishwak Sen film Gangs of Godavari which is slated for release on May 31 since the film is expected to act as a crowd-puller for these theatres. The theatre owners are also heavily relying on the response for some of the biggest films whose releases have been pushed due to various reasons including the Lok Sabha Elections which includes the Prabhas starrer Kalki 2898 AD, Ram Charan starrer Game Changer, Allu Arjun starrer Pushpa 2: The Rule, Chiranjeevi starrer Vishwambhara, Kamal Haasan starrer Indian 2, and Jr NTR starrer Devara: Part 1.
