By Bollywood Hungama News Network -

Renowned playback singer Sonu Nigam received a reprieve from the Karnataka High Court on May 15, after approaching it to quash the cases filed against him over controversial remarks made during a concert in Bengaluru last month. The court was informed that no coercive action would be taken against the artist, provided he cooperates with the ongoing investigation.

Sonu Nigam gets relief from Karnataka High Court in Pahalgam remark case

The case stems from a statement made by Nigam at the live event, where he recounted being “rudely” threatened by a young audience member who demanded he sing a song in Kannada. In a video that went viral soon after the concert, Nigam is seen responding to the incident by expressing disappointment over the tone of the demand and drawing a controversial parallel to the Pahalgam attack in Kashmir.

“In my career, I have sung in multiple languages, but the best songs I have ever sung are in Kannada,” Nigam had said. “We do a lot of shows in many places, but whenever we perform in Karnataka, we come with immense respect for you. You have treated me like family. But I didn't like it when the boy there, who is not even as old as my career, rudely threatened me to sing in Kannada.” The singer then added, “It is because of such behaviour that incidents like the Pahalgam attack happen.”

The comment stirred strong reactions across Karnataka, with Dharmaraj A, a leader of the pro-Kannada outfit Karnataka Rakshana Vedike, filing an FIR against the singer. He accused Nigam of making emotionally provocative comments that hurt the sentiments of the Kannadiga community. The backlash escalated as members of the Kannada film industry announced a boycott, refusing to collaborate with the singer.

Speaking on the matter, Bengaluru Rural District Superintendent of Police, C K Baba insisted that there was no correlation between the request for a Kannada song and the incident in Kashmir. Hence, he insisted that the remark hurt the sentiments of Kannadigas because of which they decided to register a case against the music artist.

Following the uproar, Sonu Nigam issued a public apology via social media, attempting to clarify his intent and expressing regret over any unintentional hurt caused.

The Karnataka High Court's interim relief offers temporary reprieve, but the matter remains under investigation, with the state government emphasizing cooperation from the singer’s side.
