Netflix has officially announced its upcoming Tamil original Stephen, a psychological crime thriller that promises to blur the lines between guilt and innocence. The streamer unveiled the film’s gripping first poster on social media, instantly sparking excitement among fans of the dark, intense genre. Starring Gomathi Shankar in the titular role, the film is directed by debutant Mithun Balaji and produced by Jayakumar and Mohan under JM Production House.

The intriguing tagline of the film sets the tone: ‘A psychiatrist evaluating a self-confessed serial killer unravels a twisted web of trauma, deceit, and manipulation — only to question if the killer is truly guilty or just another victim in a larger, darker game’. The concept has already caught the attention of audiences who appreciate layered storytelling and morally complex characters.

 

Opening up about his vision, director Mithun Balaji shared, “Stephen is about a calm, calculated serial killer who carries secrets which are unsettlingly personal. Gomathi Shankar plays the title role with a quiet intensity, making the character feel both reel and real.” Calling the project deeply meaningful as his debut, Mithun added, “We tried to approach the subject with utmost care and honesty. I’m grateful to Netflix for giving us the opportunity and space to tell stories in such a distinct genre. The fact that our film will be available for the world to see across over 190 countries feels unreal, and I hope people enjoy this humble attempt at the craft.”

 

 

Actor-writer Gomathi Shankar, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Mithun, described the role as one of the most challenging of his career. “Stephen is a film that looks beyond the crime to the man behind it. Portraying him meant finding the nuances that make him vulnerable, even endearing, while his darkness always remained intact,” he explained. “For me, the challenge was to bring out the shades of a serial killer without turning them into absolutes. The real reward is having this journey land on Netflix, whose instincts and reach give the film its truest stage.”

 

The film also features Michael Thangadurai and Smruthi Venkat in key roles. With its psychological depth, layered characters, and global streaming release, Stephen marks a bold step forward for Tamil cinema in the thriller space — and fans can’t wait to see what sinister secrets lie within its story.
