Kantara makers get accused of plagiarism over their song ‘Varaha Roopam’ by Thaikkudam Bridge; claims it to be similar to their song ‘Navarasam’

With Kantara doing well across all quarters of the country, Kannada cinema is experiencing a new high when it comes to its popularity. However, the Rishab Shetty starrer has gotten into trouble over copyright infringement for its music. The popular Kerala-based band Thaikkudam Bridge has accused the makers of the film of plagiarism after finding similarities between their track ‘Navarasam’, that released over five years ago, and the film’s popular track ‘Varaha Roopam’.

Kantara hit the theatres last month and has garnered applause from audiences as well as celebs in both Bollywood and South film industries. Their soundtracks, which too released about the same time, also received some rave reviews until some fans started noticing the stark similarities between the track, ‘Varaha Roopam’ and the Thaikkudam Bridge song, ‘Navarasam’. While many of them tagged the band on social media, the latter has finally responded to it with a statement that they shared on their official Instagram page.

 

Their statement not only clarified that they had nothing to do with the film but they also asserted that it was a clear case of copyright infringement. It read, “We would like our listeners to know that Thaikkudam Bridge is in no way or form affiliated with "Kantara". The unavoidable similarities between our IP "Navarasam" and "Varaha Roopam" in terms of audio is, therefore, a blatant infringement of copyright laws. From our standpoint the line between "Inspired" and "Plagiarized" is distinct and indisputable and therefore we will be seeking legal action against the creative team responsible for this. There has been no acknowledgement of our rights over the content and the song is propagated as an Original piece of work by the movie's creative team. We request the support of our listeners and encourage you to spread the word about the same. Also request our fellow artistes to share and raise your views protecting music copy right.”

 

 

In an earlier interview, the music composer of Kantara, Ajaneesh Loknath had responded to the social media trolls about the song being a blatant copy of ‘Navarasam’, clarifying that it was inspired by the music style of the Kerala-based band but was different from their number.

 

Kantara is expected to be a fantasy drama based on folklore related to a land dispute between the villagers and their landlord. Directed by Rishab Shetty too, the film released in Hindi, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada, and Tamil.
