Shruti Haasan is stepping into one of her most exciting collaborations yet as she gears up to share screen space with superstar Rajnikanth in the upcoming film Coolie. As anticipation builds around this high-profile release, Shruti is opening up about what the project—and her co-star—mean to her.

Coolie star Shruti Haasan recalls Kamal Haasan saving Rajnikanth from an on-set mishap; says, “Rajini Sir told me ‘I’m always thankful to Kamal’”

In an interview with Filmfare, Shruti reflected on her experience working with Rajnikanth, especially considering her father Kamal Haasan's long-standing professional history with him.

"Now I got the other perspective, I get to hear Rajni sir's stories. I was hearing one side (Kamal Haasan's side) for like 30 plus years and now I get to hear the other perspective," she shared, candidly addressing the public perception that the two legendary families were always closely connected.

"So the lot of people thought that the families were very close but we really weren't. We didn’t really have that interaction while growing up, I think I must have met him like a hello hi just for 3–4 times in my entire life, so I had no idea who this person beyond the persona was. To me he was Rajni sir like everybody else," the actress shared.

Describing the shift from admiration to on-set association, Shruti spoke about discovering the person behind the legend. "It was really wonderful to getting to know him and working with him and he is so different to papa. He is a mix of everything, he is extremely humble and extremely sharp, notices everything, he seems extremely non-judgemental but is very clear about how he does things. It's really an amalgamation of qualities and just very kind to everyone on set, just a pleasure working with him", she added.

One particular memory that stood out for Shruti during filming was a story Rajnikanth shared involving her father Kamal Haasan—offering a rare glimpse into their early years in cinema.

"He told me once that, 'Thank God for your dad or else I could have hurt myself really badly. Your dad was passing by once and said what are you doing up, I said I’m supposed to jump and he said you’re not supposed to jump without a mattress. He went and bought the mattress and told me how to jump, so I’m always thankful to Kamal for that.’”

This anecdote, heartfelt and grounded, added a layer of personal meaning to Shruti’s journey in Coolie, as she steps into a world long associated with both her cinematic lineage and individual aspirations.

Beyond Coolie, Shruti Haasan is set to broaden her creative landscape with The Eye, her international debut as a lead actor. Slated for release later this year, the film marks a new direction in her career, one that promises global exposure while staying rooted in her diverse filmography.
