Cheating registered against Ram Gopal Varma for allegedly borrowing Rs. 56 lakh for producing Telugu movie Disha in 2020

A cheating case has been registered against filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma for allegedly borrowing Rs. 56 lakh from a proprietor of a production house to produce the 2020 Telugu movie, Disha. The filmmaker had allegedly promised to return the amount ahead of the release of the film. It was based on the gangrape and murder of Hyderabad doctor which was carried out by four persons, who were later killed in alleged encounter.

According to National Herald, "On a complaint lodged by Koppada Sekhar Raju of Sekhara Art Creations, a case was booked at Miyapur Police Station under Cyberabad Police Commissionerate."

 

The proprietor informed the police that a mutual friend had introduced him to Varma in 2019. He said that he gave Rs. 8 lakh to the filmmaker in January 2020 followed by Rs. 20 lakh a few days later. Varma had promised to repay the amount in six months span. Then in February 2020, Varma allegedly borrowed another Rs. 28 lakh citing financial issues. The filmmaker had promised to repay the money ahead of the film's release but later found out that the filmmaker was not the producer of the said project. He later alleged that Varma cheated him.

 

A case against Ram Gopal Varma has been registered under Indian Penal Code (IPC) sections 406 (criminal breach of trust), 417 (punishment for cheating), 420 (cheating and 506 (punishment for criminal intimidation).
