Marvel Studios has always loved hiding secrets in plain sight, and Thunderbolts is no exception. Ever since the first teaser dropped, eagle-eyed fans noticed something curious—the asterisk (*) placed after the film’s title in its logo. While it sparked wild theories online, the film’s release has finally revealed the surprising truth: the asterisk isn’t a typo or stylistic choice—it’s a narrative twist that reshapes the very foundation of the Thunderbolts team. Warning: Spoilers ahead.

Thunderbolts is about a team of antiheroes who are lured to a secret vault by CIA director Valentina Allegra de Fontaine (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh), John Walker (Wyatt Russell) and Ava Starr (Hannah John-Kamen) are told to destroy the servers but upon reaching there, they realize that even they’ll get eliminated. On top of it, a man named Bob (Lewis Pullman) is also present in the vault, with no memory of how he reached the site. The foursome somehow escapes the vault before it blasts. Realizing that Bob has superhuman abilities, Valentina takes him away while the rest of the three flee from the scene. They are joined by Yelena’s father Alexei Shostakov (David Harbour) but get caught by Bucky (Sebastian Stan) who wants them to testify against Valentina. The team gets a new – Thunderbolts.

 

Meanwhile, Valentina manipulates Bob and turns him into a genetically enhanced human called ‘Sentry’ who defeats the Thunderbolts. One thing leads to another and Sentry transforms into The Void, who turns everyone nearby into shadows, thus engulfing the city in darkness. The Thunderbolts manage to help Bob to defeat the Void and everything turns normal.

 

The Thunderbolts are all set to confront Valentina but she once again lures them, this time to a press conference. Here, she announces that the Thunderbolts have been secretly working for her. She also introduces them as the New Avengers! The film ends here and for the first time, the title is displayed with the new tagline – Thunderbolts - The New Avengers.

 

And that’s not all. In the post-credits-scene, the New Avengers receive a signal from space, and satellites reveal a spacecraft with a giant number 4 on it, indicating a Fantastic Four connection.

 

With its deceptive asterisk, shocking reveals and jaw-dropping post-credit tease, Thunderbolts doesn’t just expand the MCU; it redefines it. And with The Fantastic Four: First Steps just around the corner (releasing on July 25), Marvel fans better buckle up. The next phase has truly begun.
