The legacy of Iron Maiden is set to take centre stage with the upcoming documentary Iron Maiden: Burning Ambition, which is scheduled to release in cinemas on May 15, 2026. Directed by Malcolm Venville, the film offers an extensive look into the journey of one of the world’s most influential heavy metal bands, charting their rise from small venues in East London to sold-out stadiums across the globe.

Backed by unprecedented access to official archives and personal reflections from both former and current members of the band, the documentary aims to capture the evolution of Iron Maiden over the last five decades. Through a combination of interviews, archival footage, and immersive storytelling, the film also explores the deep connection the band has maintained with generations of fans worldwide.

 

One of the central elements of the documentary is the story behind Eddie, the band’s instantly recognizable mascot who gradually evolved into a defining symbol of Iron Maiden’s identity. Speaking about the creative approach behind the film, director Malcolm Venville explained how Eddie became much more than just album artwork over the years. “Eddie became the band's public face and mythic alter ego, with his evolution across artwork originally created by Derek Riggs mirroring the history of the band itself,” said Venville.

 

The documentary reportedly uses specially designed animated sequences inspired by the artwork of illustrator Derek Riggs to bring Eddie’s transformation to life onscreen. These visual segments serve as a narrative thread throughout the film, reflecting different eras of the band’s history while offering fans a more imaginative and symbolic interpretation of Iron Maiden’s journey.

 

Beyond the music, Iron Maiden: Burning Ambition also focuses on the cultural impact of the band and the loyal global community that has grown around their music over the decades. The film highlights how Iron Maiden stayed committed to their artistic identity despite changing trends in the music industry.

 

Distributed in India by Universal Pictures India in association with Warner Bros. Discovery, the documentary promises to give audiences a rare behind-the-scenes look into one of rock music’s most enduring and influential acts.
