Sushmita Sen reveals how Mahesh Bhatt smartly got her to perform in her debut film Dastak: “He told his brother Mukesh Bhatt, ‘Yeh kisko leke aaye ho? She doesn’t know anything’”

Sushmita Sen became a sensation after she won the Miss Universe pageant in 1994. As expected, she was flooded with offers. The diva, who celebrates her 48th birthday tomorrow, revealed in an interview with Mid-Day how she became a part of her debut film, Dastak (1996) and how Mahesh Bhatt extracted a fine performance from her.

Sushmita began by saying that after winning the Miss Universe title, she had settled in Los Angeles, USA, where she even bought a house. This was her life for three years until she met Mahesh Bhatt. She made it clear to him that she can’t act. The filmmaker met her for coffee and told her, “You don’t have to act. You have to play yourself, that is Sushmita Sen. Also, when did I say you’re a good actor? I’m a damn good director.”

 

Sushmita was convinced and signed the film. She then revealed that no acting workshops or dialogue instructor was provided to her. She landed on the sets directly on the day of the mahurat. When she came out of the vanity van, she was shocked to see 40 media persons waiting to see her give her first-ever shot for a film. As expected, the actress was apprehensive. But Mahesh Bhatt told her, “‘Let them watch. It’s after all Miss Universe’s mahurat’”.

 

 

To add to her tension, Mahesh Bhatt changed the scene to a difficult one. She exulted, “(I had) no acting experience. For two years, I’d been professionally trained to be a lady. Here, I was to show aggression that I don’t understand, throwing my earrings at the morgue man.” As expected, she couldn’t crack it. This prompted Mahesh Bhatt to tell his brother, Mukesh Bhatt, ‘Yeh kisko leke aaye ho? She doesn’t know anything’.

 

Sushmita Sen, at this point, lost her cool. She reminded him that she had made it clear that she couldn’t act and that it was wrong on his part to insult her. This is when Mahesh Bhatt told her, “‘That’s the anger [I was looking for]. Now show it in the film’.”

 

Later, Sushmita Sen learned that the ‘media persons’ on the sets were actually junior artists hired by Mahesh Bhatt!
