Veteran actor Suresh Oberoi, fresh off his success in the recent film Animal, recently offered a candid look back at his career, including navigating industry struggles and insecurity among fellow actors.

On his 77th birthday, Oberoi spoke openly about instances where actors refused to work with him, citing various reasons. He even claimed that he faced attempts to damage his image, with whispers of being difficult to work with. Despite these challenges, Oberoi carved his path, captivating audiences with his performances and ultimately earning a National Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Mirch Masala.

 

However, Oberoi's journey wasn't without its financial triumphs. In a chat with Lehren Retro, he revisited a defining moment: earning more than Anil Kapoor in the 1987 film Thikana.

 

“I had taken Rs 25,000 more than Anil Kapoor in Thikana,” Oberoi shared. “With Mahesh Bhatt. I was getting good money, a good price. The only thing is few people didn't want me to work with him.”

 

Oberoi pointed to insecurity, and claimed that some colleagues feared that his talent could overshadow their own. “Imagine somebody is a better actor than me and there is someone who can steal the show from them, then what will they say? They will say, 'nahi yar tang karta hai woh.' They will say anything. They won't say, 'I am scared.'" Oberoi highlighted veterans like Jeetendra and Mithun Chakraborty who were unfazed by his talent and welcomed collaboration.

 

Speaking of his latest release, Animal, helmed by Sandeep Reddy Vanga, was released on December 1. While Oberoi plays a pivotal role in the film, it stars Ranbir Kapoor and Rashmika Mandanna in the lead. Meanwhile, Bobby Deol plays the antagonist in the movie.
