Ram Gopal Varma’s SHOCKING confession: "Shiva’s was inspired by Bruce Lee’s Return Of The Dragon...I removed the restaurant and added the college"

Ram Gopal Varma had an entertaining session on the first day of Red Lorry Film Festival 2026 before the screening of his cult film, Shiva (1990). RGV made some surprising confessions about the inspiration behind the Nagarjuna-starrer.

Ram Gopal Varma said, “When I was making Shiva, I wasn’t experienced. I had not spent time in the industry. I just wanted to make a film that I wanted to see. Having said that, it’s not like Shiva is completely original. I referenced from a lot of films and also real-life incidents. Strangely, I took the plotline of Shiva from Bruce Lee’s film Return Of The Dragon (1972).”

 

Ram Gopal Varma explained, “In that film, the protagonist travels from Hong Kong to Rome and works in a restaurant. Some goons come to harass him and it leads to a lot of drama. I took the plot, removed the restaurant and inserted a college setting! I then literally followed the same screenplay (smiles).”
