Priyanka Chopra hosts pre-Oscars 2022 event with Mindy Kaling and Kumail Nanjiani - "Today I stand among peers, amongst colleagues, amongst South Asian excellence"

Priyanka Chopra co-hosted the pre-Oscars event celebrating South Asian excellence in cinema on March 23 at Beverly Hills in California, ahead of the main Academy Awards ceremony on March 28.

The multi-hyphenate attended the event wearing a black saree and hosted the Pre-Oscar event alongside other South Asian colleagues Mindy Kaling, Kumail Nanjiani, Bela Bajaria, Maneesh K. Goyal and Shruti Ganguly. A snippet of the new mom’s speech has been doing rounds on social media where the actor recalled her beginnings in Hollywood, “When I came here 10 years ago and started looking for work in America, I remember I was at a Golden Globes party and Aziz Ansari and I met at an after party and it was just him and I and we wanted to count how many brown people were in the room and it was just us,” Priyanka said in her speech.

 

“And you know it was great, we congratulated each other, encouraged each other and we went out and met everyone else," she added. Sponsored by the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Science, UTA, Johnnie Walker, Juggernaut ad South Asian Arts Resiliency Fund of the India Center, the Pre-Oscar event celebrated the talents of South Asia. "But today I am not someone else. Today I stand among peers, amongst colleagues, amongst South Asian excellence. In another clip, Priyanka Chopra calls the event an "amazing idea" and congratulates south Asian nominees that included a shoutout for two-time nominee Riz Ahmed. Last year, Priyanka Chopra and husband Nick Jonas had announced the Oscar nominees. Her film The White Tiger, where she acted and also produced, bagged a nomination for best adapted screenplay for Ramin Bahrani. In 2016, Chopra presented the best film editing Oscar with actor Liev Schreiber.

 

Oscar-nominated actor Riz Ahmed and filmmakers like Suroosh Alvi, PawoChoyning Dorji, Joseph Patel, Riz Ahmed and Aneil Karia, Elizabeth Mirzaei, Gulistan Mirzaei, Rintu Thomas and Sushmit Ghosh were set to be the honorary guests for the evening. This year, Oscars will be hosted by Amy Schumer, Regina Hall and Wanda Sykes. The 94th Academy Awards will be held on March 27 at Hollywood's Dolby Theatre.
