Nick Jonas recalls difficult yet heart-warming varmala ceremony from his wedding with Priyanka Chopra

Nick Jonas recently looked back at a special moment from his wedding with Priyanka Chopra Jonas. The couple, who got engaged in July 2018, exchanged vows five months later at a lavish multi-day affair set in India, the bride's home country.

In a recent interview with PEOPLE, Jonas opened up about his collaboration with The Children’s Place for their 2023 Back-to-School campaign, using the opportunity to reflect on his wedding weekend. He shared that the event was filled with countless favourite memories, but one particular moment during the traditional Indian ceremony at Umaid Bhawan Palace in Jodhpur stood out in his mind.

 

"There's this one moment in Indian weddings where the bride and groom are lifted on the shoulders of their family members and there's sort of a game that's played where this garland is put on each other," Jonas explained. "They try to be the first to put the garland on the other." He humorously added, "Especially when you have someone as competitive as me and Pri."

 

The singer shared how the game symbolised family pride and unity. "Whoever is the one to put it first, that side of the family is the more dominant. So it's really for the family members to feel pride and that's just a funny game. But it's really heart-warming and a great way for the families to all connect," he concluded.

 

Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra Jonas initially tied the knot in a Western wedding ceremony officiated by the groom's father on December 1, 2018. The following day, they celebrated their union with a traditional Hindu ceremony, followed by several wedding receptions that brought together their diverse cultures and families.
